Lane Moffett wanted to be out at the Bear Trace at Harrison Bay.

But the weather conditions wouldn't allow he and his 7-year-old son, Austin, to play outside.

So they played a little inside on a putting green at GolfSmith to pass the time on a recent rainy afternoon. Moffett toyed with a few different putters including a soon-to-be-extinct belly-putter.

Austin lined up his putt. But forgot to align his feet and missed the cup by a wide margin before giggling to his pops.

"I'd rather be out at Bear Trace," Moffett said. "I love the wildlife, and another thing I love about it, and I love a lot of the water holes which is pretty rare for our area."

Moffett said he first introduced his son to golf about three years. The little one would hit balls in the backyard, but he's since out-grown that tract of land.

"We have to go to the range because he'd hit it down the street," Moffett said. "I think the kids want to spend times with their dads, and I think that's part of what gets them interested in golf. That, and driving a golf cart."

Austin has an age advantage on his father. Moffett, a former football player at Bradley Central, picked up the game when he was 29-years-old.

"I remember giving the guys on the golf team a hard time," he recalled. "That was a big mistake. Looking back, it's like, 'We should have been with you.'"
