Options abound for holiday gifts to golfers

A golfer could list dozens of things on his or her holiday wish list.

No gift giver can pass along a good short game, a hole-in-one or breaking 90, 80 or 70 for the first time, but many potential gifts can help golfers enjoy their time on the course, on the range or just lounging around talking golf.

Three Chattanooga-area golf retailers -- Golf Headquarters, GolfSmith and Chattanooga Golf Center -- offer a variety of products and services to make a golfer smile during the season of giving.

"Golf balls are always popular -- shoes, golf bags and GPS devices or range-finders when it comes to more expensive things," said Golf Headquarters sales manager Chris Harris. "If somebody wants to gift a set of clubs but doesn't know which ones, we'll give them a box and the golfer can come in and get fitted for free."

GolfSmith and the Golf Center offer very similar deals this time of year, and all three have experts with hundreds of hours experience using ball-flight technology to find the perfect fit.

Most area club professionals offer gift certificates for lessons, even to those who aren't members of their club. Nob North, Moccasin Bend, The Bear Trace at Harrison Bay and city-run Brainerd and Brown Acres are public courses that offer vouchers for rounds, merchandise and practice time.

"Gift certificates for rounds and lessons are good, too," Harris said. "Most can be used any time of the year. Not everybody wants to work to shave 10 shots by next Christmas. But everybody wants to have fun while playing."
