Golf Notes: UTC's Gosselin in second place in State Amateur

Wes Gosselin, the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men's golf captain for the upcoming season, shot a 4-under-par 66 Tuesday in the opening round of the Tennessee Amateur at Holston Hills Country Club in Knoxville -- his hometown -- and is in second place, one shot behind Zachary Smith from Bartlett.

Future UTC teammate Lake Johnson from Chattanooga Christian School is one shot behind Gosselin, as is The Honors Course member and Tennessee Golf Hall of Fame member Tim Jackson of Germantown. Lee University player Peyton Sliger is in a six-way tie for 10th at 69, and Flames teammate Taylor Davis, David Weeks from Harrison, Chattanooga teenager Scott Stevens and former Ooltewah resident Nick Blakely of Nashville are in the huge group sharing 16th place at 70.

Junior Classic begins

The Chattanooga Junior Classic, the season-ending tournament for the CDGA Junior Tour, will begin today at The Honors Course with the top four seeds in five divisions competing in match play. Today's winners advance to the finals Thursday morning. The top seeds are Matt Ott, Tyson Venable, Ben Rebne, Kelsey Hodge and Ryann McCuistion.

Terry Frohnmayer, who won the U.S. Senior Women's Amateur at The Honors Course in 2011, has accepted her exemption into the 2015 edition of the tournament, which will be played just outside Nashville at Hillwood Country Club. The 2011 runner-up, Mina Hardin also has accepted her excemption.

Qualifying for the tournament will run Aug. 18-Sept.23, including a date at Belle Meade Country Club near Nashville on Aug. 26. Defending champion Joan Higgins and 2012-13 champion Ellen Port also have filed entries.

Area aces

Charlie Campbell made a 150-yard hole-in-one on July 26 on No. 9 at Creeks Bend. It was his third ace, and he used an 8 iron, as witnessed by Mike Tadlock.

Gayla Smith sank a hole-in-one on July 28 on No. 7 at Valleybrook. It covered 155 yards, and she used a 3 hybrid club for the shot witnessed by Marie Morrison and Betty Alley.
