Golf Notes: Simonsen close to top 20 and PGA Championship berth

The Honors Course head professional Henrik Simonsen shot a 1-over-par 71 in his third round Tuesday of the PGA Professional National Championship at Philadelphia Cricket Club. If Simonsen finishes within the top 20 today, he will earn an exemption into the PGA Championship, the final major tournament of the year. Simonsen is at 6-over 218 and likely would need to shoot under par today to earn the distinguished automatic invitation.

Tree trimmers and mulching machines are making noise at the Honors, which is the site of the 2016 U.S. Junior Amateur Championship. Work crews have been eliminating trees to provide more room on the driving range, and the entrance road will be directed farther east than its current construction to allow more room for the stellar juniors coming to town next year.
