Golf Notes: Ooltewah's Griffith qualifies for U.S. Women's Amateur

Samantha Griffith of Ooltewah was one of 11 qualifiers Monday at Laurel Springs Golf Club in Suwanee, Ga., for the U.S. Women's Amateur tournament to be held Aug. 10-16 at 101-year-old Portland Golf Club in Oregon.

Griffith shot a par 71. The medalist Monday was 2013 Georgia Girls' champion Bailey Tardy of Norcross at 66, followed at 68 by Rinko Mitsunaga of Roswell, Ga., a reigning U.S. Women's Amateur Four-Ball champ and Georgia Women's Match Play winner.

Area aces

Don Gregory scored the sixth hole-in-one of his life last Thursday at Creeks Bend - on No. 10 with Thad Smith, Jake Gray, Adam Hughes and Jim Cofer watching. It covered 165 yards, and he used a 7 iron.

Reid McClurd has three holes-in-one now after acing No. 5 at Valleybrook last Friday. The 155-yard shot with a 5 iron was witnessed by Tom Massey, Jimmy Morris and Ross Hensley.
