The expansive list of amateur championship tournaments held at The Honors Course will grow this summer.

The United States Golf Association will conduct a national championship at the course in Ooltewah for a fifth time in the 32-year history of the Honors when the U.S. Junior Amateur is played July 18-23.

As with the four previous USGA nationals, two NCAA men's championship tournaments, three Southern Golf Association championships and six Tennessee Golf Association tournaments hosted by the Honors, volunteers will be in high demand.

The Chattanooga Classic Club is seeking about 400 volunteers to work various shifts in the days leading up to and during the tournament for it measure up to the lofty standards of the USGA and The Honors Course.

"Most of our past volunteers love golf and the outdoors and get satisfaction similar to if they were competing themselves," volunteer chairman Tim Haralson said. "They're living a bit vicariously when they volunteer at these events."

There are plenty of perks for donating time to the event. Each volunteer - for a $35 fee - will receive a golf shirt and hat, free meals and a credential to the competition. Those who volunteer for three or more shifts get to play the course on a date to be determined later.

"This is by far the biggest tournament we've done in terms of the number of volunteers needed and prestige of the event," Haralson said. "This is one of the USGA's top championships, meaning that the type of golfer who plays in this amateur will (become) an elite college player and likely a PGA Tour player."

Past champions include Tiger Woods and Jordan Spieth - the only two who have won the U.S. Junior multiple times - as well as David Duval, Hunter Mahan, Johnny Miller and Honors Course member Charlie Rymer.

Volunteer positions that need to be filled include marshals, spotters, walking scorers, standard-bearers, scoreboard assistants, scorecard runners, range assistants, caddie bib assistants, college coaches' tent operators, transportation drivers, general hospitality greeters and course service volunteers.

Those interested in volunteering may sign up and find more information at https://ChattanoogaClassic.club or by contacting Haralson at 423-468-4666.

"For those who love golf, just seeing the Honors is an amazing experience," Haralson said. "To see the best junior amateurs in the world play it will be a different experience altogether."
