Former UTC golfer Stephan Jaeger builds on his lead in California

HAYWARD, Calif. - Stephan Jaeger backed up his record 12-under-par 58 with a 65 on Friday, giving him a five-stroke lead halfway through the Web.com Tour's Ellie Mae Classic.

The 27-year-old former Baylor School and University of Tennessee at Chattanooga player matched the lowest score on a substantial tour Thursday with the 58. Japan's Ryo Ishikawa also shot a 12-under 58 to win the 2010 Crowns on the Japan Tour. Jaeger broke the Web.com record of 59 held by Notah Begay III, Doug Dunakey, Jason Gore, Will Wilcox and Russell Knox. Six players have shot 59 on the PGA Tour, and one on the PGA Tour Champions.

On Friday at TPC Stonebrae, Jaeger bogeyed the first hole but birdied Nos. 8-10 and 15-17 for a 17-under 123 and a five-shot advantage over Rhein Gibson and Brandon Hagy.

Jaeger came to the United States from Germany as a foreign exchange student in 2006.

Baylor School player Keith Mitchell had a 4-under 66 and is tied for 33rd place at 5-under 135. Dalton's Blake Adams and former Athens, Tenn., resident Eric Axley are tied for 48th at the midway mark. Adams fired a 65 and Axley carded a 67.

McCallie's Adam Mitchell and former UTC golfer Steven Fox both missed the cut. Mitchell had a 75 to finish at 1-under 139 to tie for 83rd. Fox had a 68 for an overall 1-over 141 to tie for 108th.
