Mills tops English in Publinks semis

BANDON, Ore. - Former Baylor School golfer Harris English reached the semifinals before losing to qualifying medalist Corbin Mills in the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship at the Bandon Dunes Golf Resort. English, a Thomasville, Ga., resident who just finished his University of Georgia playing career, defeated J.J. Spaun of Los Angeles 2 and 1 in the quarterfinal round Friday but then fell 5 and 3 in a very windy round against Mills, a Clemson player from Easley, S.C. Mills plays today for the championship against Derek Ernst of Clovis, Calif., a 3 and 2 semifinal winner over Jonathan Randolph of Brandon, Miss. Brianna Do of Viet Nam will face Marissa Dodd of Allen, Texas, in the Women's Amateur Publinks final match. Dodd won 2 and 1 over UCLA star Tiffany Lua, who had beat recent University of Tennessee at Chattanooga graduate Christine Wolf on Thursday. English took his first lead in the quarterfinal against Spaun on the 15th hole and secured the match when Spaun was assessed a two-stroke penalty for marking his ball off the putting surface on No. 17. The greens are marked with white dots in places to show where the fairway ends. "The grass all kind of looks the same and the greens run into the fairways," English said in an USGA website posting. "If my ball was his ball, I probably would have done the same thing. You never want to win a match like that, but I'll take it."
