SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Signal Mountain's Hugh Enicks, the cross country and track coach at Red Bank High School, finished 19th overall and was the first U.S. finisher in his 50-54 age group in the World Masters Championships marathon race Sunday. The event is for runners 35 years and older. The 51-year-old Enicks, a three-time winner of the Chickamauga Battlefield Marathon, was sixth in his age group in 2 hours, 47 minutes, 29 seconds. He helped his USA team win the bronze medal.
Baseball
• The Seattle Mariners promoted former Cleveland State pitcher Stephen Pryor to the Class AA Jackson (Tenn.) Generals on Thursday, and he did well for them the next night in Zebulon, N.C. Pryor, husband of the former Christian Hudgens of Chattanooga, was the June pitcher of the month for the High Desert Mavericks in Adelanto, Calif. Friday night for the Generals, he got five outs with two strikeouts and no baserunners despite having been on the road or in the air from 6:30 a.m. EDT until arriving at the Carolina Mudcats' stadium at 6:30 p.m. Pryor did not pitch Saturday or Sunday. He's from Mount Juliet, Tenn., so Jackson is close to home. Pryor practiced with the Double-A group in spring training but hurt his elbow and stayed behind. After a rough May in the California League with control problems, he had an excellent June and July. The Generals will play July 26-30 in Chattanooga.

• Chattanooga's Matt Robertson and Spencer Honey, Dalton's Will Snipes and Cohutta's Nick Ray are among the 120 golfers competing Tuesday and Wednesday at the Capital City Club-Crabapple course at Woodstock, Ga., for five spots and two alternate positions for the 2011 U.S. Amateur Championship being held Aug. 22-28 in Erin, Wis.
• Emma de Groot and Jordan Britt will be attempting to join former University of Tennessee at Chattanooga teammate Christine Wolf in the 111th U.S. Women's Amateur through a qualifier Tuesday at Roswell, Ga. Former Soddy-Daisy golfer Haley Cothran, former GPS player Mary Alice Murphy and former Baylor state champion Brooke Pancake also will be among the 69 competitors playing 18 holes at Ansley Golf Club-Settindown Creek for eight spots and two alternate standings for the national championship Aug. 8-14 at the Rhode Island Country Club. Wolf and de Groot just finished their careers at UTC, where former GPS and Signal Mountain High School standout Britt will be a sophomore this year. Pancake is an Alabama team leader, while Murphy is ready for her second year at Mercer and Cothran will be a Middle Tennessee State freshman. De Groot will begin LPGA Qualifying School in Daytona Beach, Fla., on July 26.
Diving
• CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. - University of Tennessee diver Jordan Mauney from Signal Mountain and Baylor School finished seventh in the men's platform competition Sunday at the USA Diving Zone A National Preliminary Meet. That left him one spot short of qualifying for the nationals.
Auto Racing
• After winning the Crate race and finishing fifth in the Super Late Model event Friday night at Boyd's Speedway, Jason Welshan of Maryville went to Erlanger hospital with tightness in his chest. But he was released after tests and finished first and third in two Late Model races Saturday night at Crossville.
Football
• The Chattanooga Locomotion lost 20-0 to New England in an Independent Women's Football League playoff semifinal Saturday night at Red Bank High School. The Locomotion finished their season 7-3.
General
• A group of Carson-Newman College alumni have organized an inaugural Chattanooga banquet to help raise money for athletic scholarships at the Jefferson City, Tenn., school. It will be held Aug. 6 at 6 p.m. at Concord Baptist Church. The event will include dinner, a silent auction and a roast of longtime Eagles football offensive coordinator Mike Turner. The cost is $25 per person, and tables of eight can be reserved. The chief local organizer is Dr. Lamar Brown, a former Eagles football standout from Ringgold who now is a school principal in Catoosa County.
