Brothers Matthew and Mitch Brock from Chattanooga Golf and Country Club are tied for seventh after the first round Monday in the Tennessee PGA Section's E-Z-GO Pro-Pro Championship at Chattanooga's Black Creek Club. The Brocks combined for a 7-under-par 65, five shots behind the co-leading duos of defending champions Chase Brannon and Johan Kok from Nashville's Richland and Temple Hills country clubs and 2007 winners Chris Dibble (Holston Hills, Knoxville) and Randy Helton (Riverbend, Shelbyville). Keith Burdette from Bear Trace at Harrison Bay and partner Greg Wyatt from Crossville are tied for ninth at 66 along with former Cleveland resident Nick Bailes and his partner, John Bridgeman. The tournament ends today.
Brooks Thomas took a four-stroke lead in the City Junior golf tournament with a 68 Monday at the Champions Club at Hampton Creek. The event ends today. Emily Javadi and reigning state Girls Amateur champion Blakesly Warren lead the girls division with 72s, and Lake Johnson heads the 14-15 boys and Sport Allmond tops the 12-13 boys with 76s.
OLYMPIA FIELDS, Ill. - Cleveland's Avery George shot an 85 Monday in the first round of the 2011 U.S. Girls Junior Amateur Championship at the Olympia Fields Country Club South Course. The Walker Valley High School golfer is tied for 145th place in the 156-player field. Ariya Jutanugarn of Thailand leads with a 68, one shot better than Irene Jung of Canada. Sophia Schubert of Oak Ridge shot a 73.
