13 area soccer players named TSWA all-state

Thirteen high school players from the Chattanooga area made the Tennessee Sports Writers Association boys' soccer all-state teams for 2011, including two each from McMinn County, McCallie and Baylor. Goalkeeper Henrique Ribeiro and teammate Max Kanerva, picked as a forward, were the Baylor representatives with McCallie midfielders Angel Cruz and Arturo Rocha on the Division II team, and J.T. Foreman and Zach Myers of McMinn were Class AAA selections along with Cleveland's Ben Kimball and Bradley Central's Miles Christian. Forwards Mark Koenig of Notre Dame, Sikhou Sy of Hixson, Jaxson McClure of East Hamilton and Chase Reed of Boyd-Buchanan made the AA all-state team along with Chattanooga Christian keeper Adam Ryan.

Baseball

• Former Soddy-Daisy High School baseball slugger Zach Stephens was voted the most valuable player of the Coastal League All-Star Game this past Monday. He hit a two-run home run in the top of the ninth inning to give the National stars a 3-2 win in the showcase game of the highly regarded wooden bat summer collegiate league. After earning Freshman All-America distinction this past spring for his first season as a Tennessee Tech first baseman, Stephens has hit .279 with five homers and a .464 slugging percentage with the Morehead City (N.C.) Marlins.

Football

• Junior center Kevin Day from Soddy-Daisy was one of six first-team preseason all-conference football players from Carson-Newman College announced Thursday by the South Atlantic Conference, and senior tight end Matt Cox from McMinn County was a second-team pick. Carson-Newman, predicted to finish second behind defending champion Wingate, led the league with 11 total selections. Day began starting for the Eagles in the second game of his freshman season and has been part of NCAA Division II's top rushing offense in 2009 and No. 2 rushing offense last year. Cox also was a blocker starting every game in 2010.
