The weekend grind is over for Dianne Hollands, but other than the heat, there wasn't too much to complain about.
Hollands went 14-0 playing in singles, doubles and mixed doubles on her way to championships in all three open divisions of the Tennessee Valley Open Championships at Manker Patten Tennis Club. She capped off her day by teaming with Robbye Poole to win the mixed doubles division after defeating University of Tennessee freshman Hunter Reese and University of North Carolina freshman Caroline Price 6-1, 6-7 (7-1), (10-8).
Hollands earned $1,300 along the way, while Poole's payout after winning doubles, mixed doubles and coming in runner-up in singles was $1,500.
Poole's opponent in singles and teammate in doubles, Brian Baker, had the largest payday by winning $2,350.
Hollands' day started at 9 a.m. in her singles' final against Price, and didn't end until nearly 6 in the evening. She teamed with University of Alabama freshman Emily Zabor to win the women's open division doubles crown.
"During the mixed doubles, there were a few serves I had in which I had no strength, no leg drive, no nothing," Hollands said. "All of the matches today were tough - even in my singles final against Caroline, the score wasn't indicative of how close the match really was."
Hollands, who drove 10 hours from Cleveland, Ohio, to get to the TVOC, was to get back on the road this morning, heading to Bethany Beach, Del., to play in a tournament starting Tuesday.
"It's another tournament on clay, so I was glad I was able to get some experience there this weekend," she said.
Poole nearly had his dream of three titles, but had to settle for two after falling in three sets to his good friend Baker.
"He was starting to cramp some in the third set, so I thought if I could extend the match just a little longer, I would have had a chance," said Poole, the 2008 champion. "I feel a lot better about my performance after he beat me pretty bad here last year."
