McCallie alum Ryan wins Charlotte 800 free

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Hixson resident and McCallie School graduate Sean Ryan, representing the Scenic City Aquatic Club, won the men's 800-meter freestyle race Thursday at the Charlotte Ultraswim in a time of 8 minutes, 11.1 seconds. Ryan, who just completed his freshman year at Michigan, will compete in the 200 freestyle today, the 400 on Saturday and the 1500 on Sunday. He has been training in Colorado Springs and will try for a spot on the 2012 U.S. Olympic team in the open water nationals June 10-12 at Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

Golf

• Emma de Groot, who just completed her University of Tennessee at Chattanooga career as the Southern Conference women's golfer of the year, has been chosen to the five-woman team representing Australia in the quadrennial Astor Trophy competition June 15-19 at Fairhaven Golf Club in Lytham, England. They also will play in the British Ladies Amateur Championship the week before at Royal Portrush Golf Club in Northern Island. The 87-year-old Fairhaven links course is famed for 122 bunkers, nearly seven per hole. "I'm excited. This will be my first chance to represent Australia," de Groot said in a UTC release. "I've never played links-style golf, so it will be interesting." She is the second highest ranked player on the Australia team, according to the R&A World Amateur list. The Astor Trophy event formerly was called the Commonwealth Tournament and began in 1959.

• BRENTWOOD, Tenn. - University of Memphis junior Jonathan Fly completed an eight-stroke win in the SunTrust State Open golf tournament Thursday with a 3-under-par 67 for a 54-hole 197. UTC golfer Stephan Jaeger from Baylor School also closed with a 67 and tied Germantown's Tim Jackson, Cordova's Alan McAfee and Knoxville's Matthew Mincer for second at 205. UTC sophomore Steven Fox from Hendersonville tied for eighth at 209, and McMinnville's Brett Patterson shared 11th at 210. Chattanooga pro Richard Rebne and UTC assistant coach Ben Rickett tied for 13th at 211.

Tennis

• SEWANEE, Tenn. - The 18th-ranked Sewanee women's tennis team defeated Rose-Hulman 6-0 in the first round of the NCAA Division III tournament Thursday on Sewanee's Bruton-Guerry courts and faces Washington University of St. Louis this morning at 10 CDT. In the three singles matches that weren't finished against the Terre-Haute, Ind., school, the 20-6 Tigers had won first sets 6-0 or 6-1.

Softball

• CHARLESTON, Ill. - Jacksonville State junior catcher Kaycee Crow from Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe High School made the All-Ohio Valley Conference softball second team announced as the league tournament got under way. Crow hit .291 with seven home runs, 11 doubles, a triple, 30 RBIs and 30 runs in the regular season.

• GREENVILLE, N.C. - The 15th home run of the season by GPS graduate Jessica Phillips was the only scoring for Memphis in a 5-1 loss to East Carolina as the Conference USA softball tournament began Thursday. She was 1-for-2 for the Tigers (35-12), who had only two other hits.
