Baseball

• The Southern League announced Friday that Don Mincher is retiring after 12 years as the league's president, and the board of directors unanimously voted him president emeritus. "Ongoing health issues" led to his decision, which the board accepted reluctantly, according to the announcement release. Mississippi Braves general manager Steve DeSalvo, the league's vice president, was named interim president. "I will forever be grateful for the opportunity to serve as president of what I feel is the best league in baseball," said Mincher, who was general manager of the Huntsville Stars and then a part owner of that team before becoming the Class AA league's president in 2000. He played 13 seasons in the major leagues and was on the 1972 Oakland Athletics team that won the World Series.

Basketball

• HUNTSVILLE, Ala. -- The Bryan College basketball teams played late Saturday night at Oakwood University. The 53-36 win was the season opener for the Bryan women, who have a new coach, Jason Smith, after going 10-20 last year, but the men's game was an exhibition. The Lions officially start Monday in a home doubleheader against Tennessee Temple. Don Rekoske is beginning his eighth season coaching the Lions, but he may feel as if he's starting over with the loss of seven of the top eight players from last year's 21-9 squad. Lavonte Henderson is back as a 6-foot-5 senior wing who averaged eight points and five rebounds a game last year, but the only other seniors are guard Josh Decker and 6-5 center Tommy Lobach. Starters besides Henderson include freshman point guard Dion Fair from Knoxville Bearden and junior college transfers Rob Riley (Volunteer State), Anthony Moore (Coastal Georgia) and Jerrod Allen (Roane State), and Tim Fortenberry from Motlow will start or come off the bench at three positions. Key sophomores are T.J. Smith, Logan Sharp and Caleb Parsons. The Lady Lions are more blessed with veteran regulars, including senior guards Bethany McArthur, Shea Thomas and Sara Barnett, senior forward Anna Thomas, senior center Sarah Newton and junior forward Morgan Burnette.

Football

• UTC football assistant coach Geep Wade, a Mocs player from 1998 to 2001, will be the guest speaker for the Chattanooga Quarterback Club's noon luncheon meeting Monday at Finley Stadium, and the public is invited. Attendance costs $10 with a meal, $4 without. Alabama radio voice Eli Gold will be the Nov. 7 speaker, two days after the Crimson Tide's game against LSU.
