Monday's breakfast at Moccasin Bend Golf Club will be on Buck Johnson, and the former longtime Chattanooga Times sports writer couldn't be happier about it.
Johnson got his first hole-in-one Wednesday morning, using a 7-iron on the 138-yard No. 14 hole, and the standing tradition at Moccasin Bend is to buy donuts for everyone the next time you play the course. Johnson said he will play again on Monday and plans to bring several Krispy Kreme boxes with him.
"I've been close several times," said Johnson, whose first ace in more than 60 years of playing was witnessed by Bill Cronan, Bud Slack and Marvin Chastain. "I remember one that rolled up within an inch of the hole, so there's a lot of luck involved unless you're a pro.
"I can't follow the flight of the ball as well because of my eyesight, but I knew it was going straight toward the flag as soon as I hit it. The other three guys started hollering that it went in, but I thought they were just joking until I walked up and saw it."
Johnson, who worked at the Times for 44 years, with many of those as the paper's sports editor, said he plays about three times a week and summed up his Wednesday round by saying, "I played about as poor as I usually do, but all I'll remember was that one shot now."
