Guerrys in USTA national semifinal

Chattanoogans Zan and Jeff Guerry won 6-2, 6-1 Friday in the quarterfinals of the USTA National Senior Father-Son Clay Court Championships at Sarasota, Fla. All four top-seeded duos lost, the Guerrys drilling fourth-seeded Jay and Jon Nistad of Marlton, N.J., to set up a 1 p.m. semifinal today against Oliver Reynolds and his namesake son from McDonough, Ga., who won 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 over top-seeded Chris Parker of Atlanta and Jimmy Parker of Santa Fe, N.M. The final is set for 11 a.m. Sunday.

Auto Racing

* Cleveland Speedway has its annual "Gobbler" tonight with the fifth visit this year of the Southern All-Stars Dirt Racing Series. More than $20,000 in prize money will be on the line, including $5,000 to the winner of the 50-lap race. Ray Cook of Brasstown, N.C., won last year's Gobbler, and reigning national champion Jimmy Owens of Newport, Tenn., will be present after winning the track's Shamrock race in April. Georgetown's Skip Arp won the SAS Tennessee Memorial in May, and 2011 series champion Billy Ogle Jr. of Knoxville won Cleveland Speedway events in August and September. Four-time Gobbler winner Dale McDowell from Chickamauga also plans to participate. The night also will include racing in the track's Steel Head Limited Late Model, Crate Late Model, A-Hobby, B-Hobby, Pony and FWD classes. The gates will open at 2 p.m., the grandstands at 3, and the drivers meeting is set for 6. Adult grandstand admission is $20, and pit passes cost $30.

SOFTBALL

* Southeast Whitfield High School and Frost Falcons softball standout Tavi Parris has signed scholarship papers to attend Tusculum College. Parris batted .374 with 13 RBIs and 18 runs scored for the Lady Raiders and was a three-time all-region selection. She stood out with the Falcons this past summer with a .448 average and eight doubles to go with 48 RBIs. "Tavi is a great fit for Tusculum because she adds versatility and depth defensively," Tusculum coach Julie Huebner said. "Not only is she a solid catcher with great game awareness but has the ability to play shortstop and outfield. We believe she will make an immediate impact to our lineup. She is an aggressive athlete that can not be underestimated by her size."

Soccer

* The top-ranked Lee University women's soccer team's "drive for five" officially kicks off at 2 p.m. today against Montreat College in the first round of the 2012 NAIA national tournament. The winner today in Cleveland will move on to the final 16 starting Nov. 26 at Orange Beach, Fla. The host Lady Flames (18-1-1) have won the last four titles and 20 consecutive NAIA playoff matches, but this is their last NAIA tournament. Lee is moving next year to NCAA Division II. The Lady Flames have 12 shutout wins this year and have allowed only one goal in their last three games. Montreat, the Appalachian Athletic Conference champion making its NAIA tournament debut, is 14-4-3 under coach Courtney Nash two years after going 1-14-1. "They have had a very successful season," Lee coach Matt Yelton said in a release, "and we believe we will have to be at our very best. ... At this point in the season it really is a one-game season, and every game demands maximum effort or your season is over." Also at 2 p.m. today, AAC champion Tennessee Wesleyan plays at Belhaven in the first round of the NAIA men's tournament.

* Matt Hudnut had two goals and an assist as the Covenant College men's soccer team beat Campbellsville 4-1 Friday in the National Christian College Athletic Association Mid-East Region tournament at Jackson, Tenn. Garrison Dale scored from Hudnut's assist 38 seconds after Campbellsville's goal in the fourth minute, and Tyler Morrison also scored for the Scots (10-9-1), who will play Union University at 6 p.m. EST today for a berth in the national tournament. Shuler Polk made seven saves. Union defeated Tennessee Temple 8-0.

* Trevecca Nazarene defeated Covenant 2-0 in the NCCAA women's soccer regional Friday at Campbellsville, Ky. Kayla VanEs and Alex Hammond scored the goals, leaving Covenant 15-5-1.

Volleyball

* Second-seeded Covenant College defeated Tennessee Temple 3-0 and lost 3-0 to top-seeded Campbellsville in the NCCAA Mid-East Region volleyball tournament Friday at Temple. Covenant plays Union University at 11 a.m. today, and the winner must beat Campbellsville twice for the title.

Golf

* Dalton resident Ron Lowery and Calhoun's David Mansfield finished fifth with a 54-hole 226 in the first flight as the Georgia Senior Four-Ball Championship golf tournament ended Friday at Columbus Country Club. Calhoun's Virgil Waters and Rome's Ed Mathis wound up fourth at 247 in the fourth flight. Don Marsh of Johns Creek and Larry Clark of Kingston won the championship flight by three strokes with their 207 at Green Island Country Club.
