The Lee University men's soccer team went to Marietta, Ga., on Saturday and pulled off a 1-0 win over Southern Polytechnic that kept the Flames' season alive. They became the eighth and final team in the Southern States Athletic Conference playoffs when Southern Wesleyan later edged Emmanuel 3-2.
Travis Kiger's first goal of the season held up for the Flames (9-7-1, 5-6). It came four minutes into the second half from a Chevon Roberts assist. About a minute later, the Hornets' leading scorer received a red card, forcing the NAIA's 12th-ranked team to play a man down. SPSU (10-4-1, 6-3-1) missed a penalty kick with 3:43 to go.
At Gainesville, Ga., the top-ranked Lee women (14-1-1, 11-0) won 3-0 for the SSAC regular-season championship and their 96th consecutive conference match without a loss (the last 81 being wins).
Leah Fortune had a goal and an assist for Laura Thacker with a Christina Bovbjerg goal from an Ashley Aragona assist in between. Lee's Leah Wilson made six saves.
• Bryan 2, Rio Grande 2: At Dayton, the Lions -- now barely out of the NAIA Top 25 after reaching 15th, tied the No. 1 visitors from Ohio with Rasheed Muller's goal at 34:21 from a Johannes Muller assist and Jorge Gonzalez's score with a minute left. Rafael Maccauro assisted both scores for Rio Grande, which had a 19-16 edge in shots -- 4-1 in the second overtime.
• Georgetown (w) 1, Bryan 0: At Georgetown, Ky., Stephanie Gagnon made six saves in defeat for the Lady Lions (3-13-1).
• Tennessee Wesleyan 4, Georgetown 0: At Athens, Tenn., John Carrier assisted on goals in the first 25 minutes by Daniel Cardona and Dusty McClanahan and made it 3-0 in the 36th minute, and Justin Walker completed the scoring for the host Bulldogs with a Luke Winter assist. Wesleyan dominated by counts of 29-1 in shots and 8-1 in corner kicks.
• Covenant 1, Huntingdon 0: At Montgomery, Ala., the Scots improved to 9-8-1 when Hudson Brock scored from a Matt Hudnut assist in the second overtime period.
• Covenant (w) 1, Agnes Scott 0: At Decatur, Ga., Hannah Weichbrodt's goal from a Mo Cross assist 10 minutes into the second half held up for the Lady Scots, who rose to 14-4-1 and secured at least a share of the Great South regular-season title while dropping their hosts to 8-9-1. Covenant won the shots count 18-8.
Lee routs Wesleyan
Tennessee Tech transfers Will Barnes and Chase Dunn scored 29 and 23 points as Lee University opened its men's basketball season Saturday night with a 102-66 win over visiting Tennessee Wesleyan.
Lee got 11 points and 11 rebounds from Steve Bennett, 11 rebounds also from Chad Lee and 10 assists from Duran Blue.
Derek Triplett scored 21 points for TWC, while Shannon Smith and Zamarius McClendon had 14 and 13 points, Smith with three blocks.
• At Tennessee Temple, Bryan's women won 65-55 before the Temple guys won coach Brac Brady's debut 56-45. Weddlens Beauvil and Rashaud Bell scored 14 and 13 points for Temple, while Tim Fortenberry's eight topped the Lions.
Ashley Davis, Morgan Burnette and Abigail Pippenger scored 16, 15 and 13 points for the Lady Lions, Burnette with seven rebounds and Macy Kilgore and Keila Formont with seven and six assists. Jessica Salera had 20 points and seven rebounds and Alexis McGhee and Amanda Rector added 12 and 11 points for the Lady Crusaders, Rector with seven steals.
Furman tops UTC 3-1
Despite 13 kills by freshman Sarah Batterton and 30 digs by senior Paula Passmored, the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga team lost 21-25, 25-16, 25-19, 25-23 to Furman in Southern Conference volleyball at Greenville, S.C.
Chandler Ambrester had 26 kills and 23 digs for Furman (20-7, 8-4), while Jo Wilks had 52 assists and 19 digs and Christina Dorismond made 13 kills. Bridget Camacho had 37 assists and Catherine Chason and Briana Reid had 18 and 14 digs for the Mocs (10-16, 4-7), who play Tuesday night at Samford.
• At Georgetown, Ky., the NAIA's fifth-ranked Lee University bounced back from two losses Friday in Georgetown College's Boneyard Brawl and won two 3-2 matches Saturday, the second over eighth-ranked Indiana Wesleyan. The set scores were 19-25, 26-24, 23-25, 27-25, 20-18.
Marija Zelenovic had 18 kills, eight digs and four blocks for the Lady Flames (22-9) against Indiana Wesleyan (31-2), and Irene Ojukwu had her usual double-double with 14 kills and 13 digs, while Paula Martins had 12 kills and Nicole Sumida contributed 11 kills and a team-high five blocks. Lauren Williams had 10 kills and four blocks, Camil Martinez had 47 assists, aided by Courtney Wilson's 14, and Libby Peigen had 25 digs.
"It was an intense battle, just great to watch," Lady Flames assistant coach Kevin Hudson said.
IWU went 3-1 in the tournament.
Martins had 20 kills on .447 hitting in the 23-25, 23-25, 25-18, 25-22, 15-9 defeat of Taylor, while Ojukwu had 15 kills and 15 digs, Zelenovic also had 15 kills, Martinez set 49 assists and Peigen had 31 digs.
Martinez had 39 assists and 12 digs, Peigen and Sarah Davis had 21 and 11 digs, Ojukwu had 13 kills and 12 digs and Martins made 11 kills in Friday night's 3-1 loss to Georgetown.
• At Covenant College, Stephanie Kirkpatrick totaled 47 assists as the host Lady Scots got their 20th and 21st season wins by downing Salem College 25-18, 25-21, 25-18 and defeating Judson (Ala.) 25-19, 25-9, 25-11.
Chelsea Van Dyk and Cora Schroeder made 11 and 10 kills against Judson for Covenant, which also got seven kills in that match from Pretoria den Boer. She and Jessica Chittenden led with seven apiece against Salem, and Van Dyk had six. Roslyn Nixon had 10 kills for Salem.
