Bryan, TWC women open soccer seasons and other sports news

The Bryan College women's soccer team begins its season tonight at 7:30 against Emmanuel at Rocky Ford Park in Carnesville, Ga., and Tennessee Wesleyan's Lady Bulldogs kick off Saturday at 2 p.m. at Faulkner in Montgomery, Ala. Wesleyan was picked to finish second in the 11-team Appalachian Athletic Conference this year behind defending champion Montreat, which got six first-place votes to TWC's three, and Bryan was the projected seventh-place finisher. Wesleyan's men were picked to finish first with Bryan second. Bryan's Lions open their season Monday by hosting Toccoa Falls at 7, and the TWC Bulldogs play Lee University in a scrimmage today but officially open Wednesday afternoon at home against Cumberland University. Also Saturday, Tennessee Temple's teams begin their seasons at Point University, starting with the women's game at 5:15 p.m.


* The Tennessee Wesleyan volleyball team begins its season Saturday afternoon at Berea College in Kentucky, facing the host school at noon and Indiana-Kokomo at 2. The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga has its Blue & Gold intrasquad match Saturday at Maclellan Gym. Fans can watch an open practice at 2 p.m. and then the scrimmage at 3, and players and coaches will be available afterward to sign autographs and chat with the spectators. There is no admission charge. The Mocs open play Aug. 30 against College of Charleston in Georgia Tech's tournament.


* Chattanooga's Hunt Gilliland and Larry McGill were the odd team out in six duos playing off for the last five places in match play today at the 20th annual Tennessee Senior Four-Ball Championship. Gilliland and McGill shot a 67 in the second round of stroke-play qualifying at Tennessee National Golf Club near Loudon and tied five other tandems for fourth place at 139. The other five play on after extra holes Thursday. Three other area duos were in a five-way tie at 140, including 2012 champions Mike Poe of Athens and partner Ricky Gregg from Knoxville. Steve Golliher of Knoxville and Danny Green of Jackson are the top seeds after winning stroke play by seven strokes with their 131. Winchester's Jess Voorhies and Franklin's Gary Pierce headed the Super Senior division with a 135 that featured a 65 on Wednesday. Chattanoogan Ronnie Law and partner Larry Denney tied for fifth at 141 and play Jack Ramsey and Tim Thompson in a quarterfinal match today. Voorhies and Pierce face Bill Crawford and Hugh Goodman.

* Former Baylor School golfer Carlton Forrester of Atlanta is the second alternate for the U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship from Wednesday's qualifier at The Frog Golf Club at the Georgian in Villa Rica, Ga. He shot a 71. Dalton's David Noll Jr. was in a seven-way tie for 10th at 72.


* Today is the deadline for buying UTC men's and women's basketball season tickets and being able to select seats in the somewhat reconfigured McKenzie Arena. Some seat numbers remain the same, but the school decided to reseat all season-ticket holders, and all who buy their packages by the end of business today will be contacted for appointments to select seats on a priority points system. Season tickets start at $125 for men's games, $100 for women's. Reserving any of the the 880 padded seats requires a $75 minimum per seat. Check at or call 266-MOCS ( 6627).
