Junior forward Ashlen Dewart of the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga was the Southern Conference women's basketball player of the month for December after averaging 18.8 points and 7.3 rebounds as the Lady Mocs went 3-1 in the month. She shot 64 percent from the floor (32-for-50) for the month, made 11 of 16 free throws and totaled only seven turnovers despite averaging 27.8 minutes for the four games. She had 21 points in a win over Furman beginning the month and 22 plus nine rebounds in a victory over Jacksonville State.

• Led by 27 points from Rob Riley, the Bryan College men's basketball team returned to competition for the first time in 26 days Thursday night with a smashing 98-70 Appalachian Athletic Conference win at Montreat. That was after Bryan's Lady Lions took a halftime lead before falling 75-68 to the 11-3 Montreat women. Also for the Lions (5-9, 1-1), Brandon Cole had 16 points, Robert Troino 14, Tim Fortenberry 13, Alan Holt 10, and Karrin Nash had nine rebounds with eight points. Morgan Burnette had 18 points, six rebounds, four assists, three blocks and three steals for the Lady Lions, while Kelsey Brooks and Keila Formont added 10 and nine points with four and six assists. Abigail Pippenger made four steals. Reserve Pearl Henriquez led Montreat with 15 points and four thefts.

• Cody Houck had 20 points and 14 rebounds and Michelle Davis added 14 points and 12 rebounds as Tennessee Wesleyan won 65-45 in AAC women's basketball Thursday at Point University. The two post players combined to make five of nine 3-point shots. Heather Gibson contributed 10 points, nine rebounds and five assists for the Lady Bulldogs (5-6, 2-1), who shot 58.3 percent from the field in taking a 37-16 lead into halftime. The Wesleyan men (8-7) won 81-75 over Ashford in Embry-Riddle's tournament in Florida.

• Former Section High School state-tournament MVP Taylor Adams scored 22 points to lead Gadsden State, an NJCAA Division I member, to a 109-68 win over nonscholarship Georgia Northwestern in women's basketball Thursday night in Gadsden. Seven other players scored nine to 11 points for the 11-3 hosts. Kiarra Parks scored 19 and Mariah Price added 16 in defeat for the Lady Bobcats (6-7), who got 15 points, 13 rebounds and three steals from Odessa Person. The GNTC teams host Southern Crescent Tech on Saturday at Shorter University's arena in Rome, beginning with the men's game at 4 p.m.
