Chattanooga State pitcher Haley Fagan signed this past week to continue her softball career at Trevecca Nazarene in Nashville. The former Class A all-state player signed with Tennessee out of Cornersville High School but redshirted in 2012 and transferred to Chattanooga State after the 2012 fall semester. She had played summer softball for the Chattanooga-based Tennessee Fury Gold. The 6-foot right-hander was 17-4 with a save, a 2.22 earned run average, 15 complete games and 108 strikeouts in 142 innings for the Lady Tigers and earned All-TCCAA recognition. "We are thrilled to announce that Haley Fagan will join our team," Trevecca coach Ben Tyree said in a school release. "She comes with a very good academic/athletic background and great family and Christian values." Fagan had a 3.98 grade point average in high school and was Beta Club president and homecoming queen, and she had 1,110 career points in basketball and played in the AAU nationals in that sport.
Soccer
• The Chattanooga Football Club won 2-1 over the New Orleans Jesters in National Premier Soccer League play Saturday night in the Louisiana city. Southeast Division leader Chattanooga FC (3-1-1) took a 1-0 lead in the first period and broke a 1-all tie in extra time. CFC visits the Mississippi Storm today in Ocean Springs.
• Tennessee Temple University men's soccer coach Ignacio Ortiz signed two players from North Murray High School's region-champion and state-round-of-16 team Friday: Freddy Urbina and Alexis Solorsano. The 6-foot-1 Urbina played forward for the Mountaineers and scored 27 goals this past season, but Ortiz plans to use him at center fullback. "I have seen him at center back and think that will work best for us, but it's good to know he has experience at scoring. What I really like from him and Alexis is that they came from a good program and they are hard workers. Alexis is short (5-5), but he moves the ball really well. He creates space and he creates plays." Solorsano had 11 goals with a bunch of assists for North Murray. He said he liked Ortiz and the players he's met, and he likes the small class sizes at TTU. Said Urbina: "It feels like family. It's not that big and everyone makes you feel at home."
Golf
• Former Baylor School golfer Jay Vandeventer from Bristol and Lee University's Taylor Davis from Franklin are among the semifinalists this morning in the 43rd annual Tennessee Four-Boul Championship at Holston Hills Country Club in Knoxville. Each two-man team won twice Saturday. Vandeventer and University of Tennessee teammate Brandon Rodgers from Knoxville will face the Cookeville duo of Lee Maxwell and Wes Korth. Davis and fellow Franklin resident Dylan Healey will take on Tennessee Tech players Bryce Kendrick and Lee Whitehead from the Knoxville area. Bob Rice of Riceville and Rick Mays of Athens won 3 and 2 in the round of 16 but lost to Kendrick and Whitehead in the quarterfinals.
Swimming
• Ashley Whitney was the female winner and first overall in the Chattanooga Rat Race 4.5-mile swimming event Saturday in the Tennessee River. The 1996 Olympic gold medalist in the 4x200 freestyle relay covered the distance from Rivermont Park to the Walnut Street Bridge in 1 hour, 5 minutes, 29 seconds. Another woman, Allison Ware, was second in 1:10:26. Men's winner Jason Howard was third in 1:10:40, and Miller Williams, Meaghan Suhich and Andy Klenzak were fourth through sixth in a span of five seconds. Sarah Sarbacker in 22:30 won the 1.2-mile race with Ivey Williamson the first male in 22:54. The event drew a record 120 participants.
• The Baylor School boys' swimming team earned a Scholar Team Award at the bronze level from the National Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association for its aggregate grade point average for 2012-13. The NISCA Scholar Team Award honors academic as well as athletic success, and the bronze level includes a team GPA range of 3.200-3.499 on a 4.0 scale. Baylor's boys are the reigning Tennessee champions, and six of them earned automatic All-American status. "I am very proud of the academic achievement displayed by this group of young men," Baylor coach Dan Flack said in a school release. "These guys are true student-athletes, and they have come quite a long way both in the classroom and in the pool this past school year."
Wrestling
• The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga wrestling media guide took third place in the Collegiate Sports Information Directors of America's contest for NCAA Division I winter at-large programs, also including ice hockey, field hockey, gymnastics and swimming and diving. The 56-page UTC wrestling guide was written and edited by Dr. Jay Blackman, associate athletic director for communications and marketing, with assistance from Anne Wehunt, Jim Horten, Tyler Brown, Owen Seaton and Pam Henry. With a cover featuring four Mocs seniors, the book was designed by UTC graphic design manager April Cox.
