Even Samuel L. Jackson, Chattanooga's most famous casual golfer, sent a message to former Baylor School golfer Harris English via Twitter on his most recent achievement.
English won the first PGA Tour event of his career on Sunday in Memphis at the St. Jude's Classic.
English defeated Phil Mickelson and former Tennessee Tech golfer Scott Stallings by two shots to become the first Baylor golfer to win on tour. English birdied two of his final three strokes and shot a 1-under 69 on Sunday to finish at 12-under par.
Jackson tweeted: "Big Ups to Harris English, fellow Chattanoogan, on winning St. Jude Classic."
Baylor coach emeritus King Oehmig said he accomplished few of his Sunday chores because he had to see how English -- who grew up in Thomasville, Ga. -- finished the tournament.
"It was like the old days of the state championships when my heart was in my throat," Oehmig said. "I couldn't breathe. But he brought it home, and it was his tournament."
