Bryan College senior catcher Tyler Latham and Tennessee Wesleyan senior starting pitcher Jarrod Jameson were among the 17 baseball players announced this week as NAIA preseason All-Americans for 2014. Jameson, a 6-foot-5 right-hander from Oklahoma City, pitched in 16 games in the 2013 season and went 14-0 with an earned run average of 2.57 and 68 strikeouts in 91 innings. Despite missing games because of an injury, Latham led Bryan last season with a .402 batting average, six home runs and 43 RBIs and also had an on-base percentage of .512 and 17 doubles. A 2013 first-team NAIA All-American, he was the first player from the Dayton school to receive more than honorable mention.

Running

• University of Tennessee at Chattanooga sophomore runner Teghan Henderson was chosen the Southern Conference student-athlete of the week for the combination of her runaway victory in the conference cross country meet last Saturday and her 3.8065 grade point average. She was a two-time runner of the week and the runner of the month for September, and her victory in Birmingham made her the SoCon runner of the year.

Soccer

• Snoopy Davidson of Covenant College made the 2013 All-USA South men's soccer first team announced Wednesday, while teammates Hunter Harrison, Shuler Polk and Matt Hudnut were second-team selections and Garrison Dale made the third team and was the Scots' all-sportsmanship representative. Bethany Logan, Ruth Terry and Andrea Hunt were third-team women's honorees from the Lookout Mountain school.

Wrestling

• James Jabaley, a three-time Tennessee state high school wrestling champion for Notre Dame (1976-78), died Tuesday at Erlanger hospital from cancer-related problems. Jabaley, the state tournament's outstanding wrestler in 1978, had been recognized for his support role as an adviser and mentor to youths and adults with drug-related problems. Funeral arrangements are incomplete but are being handled by Chattanooga Funeral Home's East Chapel.

Basketball

• Bryan College lost 73-58 to visiting Saint Thomas in men's basketball Wednesday, as Demonte Simpson scored 18 points and grabbed 15 rebounds for the NAIA's No. 14-ranked team. Brandon Cole topped Bryan (0-3) with 21 points and 14 rebounds.

Volleyball

• Bryan lost 3-1 in volleyball Tuesday night at Shorter University, leaving the Lady Lions 29-3 with one regular-season match to go. Two of the NAIA team's three losses have been to NCAA Division II schools. Ashley Ferris had 13 kills for the Lady Lions and Chelsea Breaden and Kara Stamper had eight apiece Tuesday, when Taylor Fink had 34 assists and 14 digs and Corrie Walker registered 24 digs.

General

• Tyler Rhoton of Franklin County High School was the male Tennessee winner in the Wendy's High School Heisman Award scholar-athlete competition. Each state had a boy and a girl chosen from a group of 20 finalists, and 12 of the state winners will be selected to go to New York City for the national finals during the college Heisman Trophy presentation weekend. Elizabeth Kroeger of Independence High School in Thompson's Station was Tennessee's female winner. "Elizabeth and Tyler are exceptional examples of well-rounded students who excel academically and serve others with the passion and persistence of a Heisman winner," two-time Heisman Trophy winner Archie Griffin said in the announcement release.

• Baylor School was awarded the 2012-13 Blue Cross Championship Series Trophy by the TSSAA as Tennessee's most outstanding high school athletic program. During the 2012-13 school year, Baylor won five TSSAA state championships in girls and boys golf, girls cross country, girls tennis, and softball.

Tennis

• Chattanooga's Wes Cash and Mark Vines of Lynchburg, Va., advanced in doubles play Wednesday at the USTA National Men's 55 Hard Court Championships in Indian Wells, Calif. Cash and Vines defeated Dennis Killelea and Keith Schmidt 6-2, 6-1 and will take on Mark Gerlach of Santa Monica, Calif., and Chicago's Rick Johnson this afternoon in a quarterfinal match.
