Appalachian State beats UTC 5-0 and other college soccer games

Appalachian State defeated the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga 5-0 in Southern Conference women's soccer Friday night.

Jane Cline and Julia Holz each had a goal and an assist and Sam Neill, Samantha Childress and Jamie Lockie also scored for ASU (6-4-2, 3-0-2). Merlin Beckwith had three assists.

The Mountaineers took 18 shots to eight for UTC (4-8, 0-5), which got four saves apiece from Taylor Mangrum and Lauren Thomas.

* Lee 1, West Florida 1: At Pensacola, Fla., two scores in the last four minutes of regulation time left the Gulf South Conference match tied.

Quade Marinell scored from a fumbled cross by Travis Kriger for Lee (4-3-3, 3-2-3) at 86:04, but Fernando Silveira equalized with a penalty kick at 89:07 for UWF (7-3-1, 6-1-1), which is coached by Hixson High School graduate and Chattanooga Football Club coach Bill Elliott. West Florida outshot the Flames 24-11, but Tom Halsall made 10 saves for the visitors.

* West Florida (w) 1, Lee 0: The Lady Flames fell to 6-3, 2-1-1 in the GSC, on a late-first-half goal by UWF's Sashana Campbell from a double assist. West Florida had a 16-11 edge in shots.

* Covenant 2, Methodist 2: At Lookout Mountain, the host Scots scored two second-half goals to match Methodist's Eric McGinnis for the game and earn the USA South tie. Joel Friesen scored form a Barrett Schmidt assist and assisted a Snoopy Davidson score for Covenant (7-4-2, 2-2-1).

* Covenant (w) 1, Methodist 0: Jessica Rowe scored unassisted early in the second overtime as the Lady Scots prevailed with seven saves by Hannah Bales. Rowe dribbled past defenders and kicked a shot through the keeper's arms at 100:45 for Covenant (6-7-1, 4-2-1).

* Sewanee 1, Millsaps 0: At Jackson, Miss., Griffin Miller's score from a double assist by Chris Haberstroh and Brian Maloney at 32:38 stood up as the game-winner in the Southern Athletic Association game. Holden Foster made seven saves for Sewanee (6-4-2, 1-1), which was outshot 18-7 and outcornered 10-4.

* Sewanee (w) 3, Millsaps 1: The female Tigers got two goals by freshman Shelby Meckstroth and one by Jamie Samociuk in winning for the sixth consecutive time and rising to 9-1-1 overall and 2-0 in the SAA. Meckstroth sandwiched her first-half scores around the Majors' score.
