Liam Johnston second, Mocs finish fourth in golf tournament

Liam Johnston tied for second individually in leading the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men's golf team to a fourth-place finish Tuesday at the AutoTrader.com Collegiate tournament at Duluth, Ga. Georgia State won the event at Berkeley Hills Country Club with a 54-hole total of 19-under-par 845, two shots better than South Florida with South Alabama third at 849 and UTC at 855, one shot ahead of Kentucky in the 14-team field. The Mocs' Ewan Scott tied for eighth at 211, three behind Johnston, and Wes Gosselin tied for 25th at 217 while Davis Bunn shared 43rd at 220.

• Lee University junior Hunter Vest from Walker Valley High School was the National Christian College Athletic Association national men's golfer of the week for his medalist performance with all three rounds in the 60s at UT-Martin's Skyhawk Classic at Paris Landing. Vest was 12 under par for 54 holes and led the Flames to the team championship in a field that included nine NCAA Division I programs.

Wrestling

• Two UTC wrestlers are among five from the Southern Conference who are ranked by the Amateur Wrestling News. In its first ratings for the 2013-14 season, AWN has UTC's Corey Mock No. 7 at 165 pounds and Nick Soto No. 19 at 133. Appalachian State also has two in the top 25 for their weight classes: Dom Parisi, 10th at 125, and Dylan Cottrell, 18th at 149. The Citadel's Turtogtokh Luvsandorj is ranked 10th at 174. The Mocs have their annual Blue-Gold meet at 11:30 a.m. on Oct. 26 at the First Tennessee Pavilion adjacent to Finley Stadium. The scrimmage part of the festivities preceding the football team's 2 p.m. game vs. The Citadel.

Volleyball

• Paula Martins had 16 kills and 10 digs in leading Lee University past visiting Shorter 3-1 in Gulf South Conference volleyball Tuesday night. Lauren Williams and Latrice Johnson had 10 kills apiece, Johnson with 10 digs as well, and Camil Martinez returned to the setter role with 33 assists in the 25-17, 16-25, 25-17, 25-23 triumph for the Lady Flames (9-5, 6-3). Libby Peigen had 18 digs. Erica Baker had 12 kills, three block solos and three block assists for Shorter (9-6, 5-4). Martinez had been gone for two weeks, helping the Dominican Republic finish second in the U-23 World Championships.

• Bryan College improved to 25-1 overall and 14-0 in Appalachian Athletic Conference volleyball with a 3-1 defeat of visiting Virginia Intermont on Tuesday in Dayton, as Chelsea Breaden and Kara Stamper had 17 and 16 kills, Taylor Fink had 43 assists and 16 digs and Corrie Walker had 26 digs.

• Despite 22 kills by Chelsea VanDyk and 40 assists and 16 digs by Stephanie Kirkpatrick, Covenant College lost 3-2 (26-24, 20-25, 23-25, 26-24, 15-13) to visiting Maryville College in USA South volleyball Tuesday night. Cora Schroeder had 11 kills and 19 digs, Anna Swain had 16 digs and Estes Carlson and Caroline Cone added 13 and 11 digs for Covenant (12-9, 5-4). Maryville is 9-0 in the league, 12-15 overall.

Soccer

• Josh Ball's penalty kick with three and a half minutes to go gave the Lee University men's soccer team a 3-2 GSC win over visiting West Alabama on Tuesday. Chevon Roberts gave the host Flames (5-3-3, 4-2-3) a lead just 2:43 into the match from a Travis Kiger pass, but two Thibault Charmey unassisted goals gave West Alabama (7-4-1, 4-4-1) a 2-1 lead by early in the second half. Gabe Franco had the equalizer for Lee at 66:16 from an Eli Price assist.

• Makayla Mendoza's second goal of the match in the 89th minute gave visiting Pikeville 3-2 win over Tennessee Temple University in women's soccer Tuesday. Her first goal came in the sixth minute for the Kentucky school, but Lacreasha Couch and Shelby Cornelius put the Lady Crusaders ahead. The teams were even in shots, 10-10.
