Georgia senior Brandon Lord from Chattanooga and Baylor School is the inaugural U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association national men's athlete of the week for his victory in the Georgia Cross Country Invitational meet last weekend. He also was the Southeastern Conference men's runner of the week after running the 8-kilometer course in 25 minutes, 49.17 seconds -- six seconds ahead of the second-place finisher. Also the winner of that meet in 2012, Lord was an SEC co-runner of the week once in each of the past two seasons.


• Bryan College junior setter Taylor Fink was the Tennessee Sports Writers Association's college volleyball player of the week after her MVP performance in Milligan's tournament last weekend. Fink had 141 assists, 33 digs and 26 kills as the Lady Lions went 4-0.

• Sewanee improved to 6-0 in volleyball this season with a 3-0 win Tuesday night against visiting Covenant. Kayla Sewell had 10 kills and Jamie Kosman made 33 digs to lead the winners, while Walker Buxton had 12 assists and Rachel Schuman had 11 assists and 10 digs. Chelsea VanDyk downed 15 kills and Estes Carlson had 25 digs for the Lady Scots (2-1), who got 20 assists and 10 digs from Stephanie Kirkpatrick.


• Bryan College is 2-0 in men's soccer after defeating a strong Martin Methodist team 1-0 on Tuesday night. Just under nine minutes into the game, Gustavo Angel Tamayo netted a volley over the keeper from just outside the box, and that held up for the difference. Bryan had advantages of 18-11 in shots and 7-1 in corner kicks.

• Freshman Shelby Meckstroth's goal from a Jamie Samociuk assist 35 minutes in gave Sewanee a 1-0 women's soccer win over visiting Covenant on Tuesday. Meckstroth has scored all three goals this season for the 2-0 Tigers, who had a 13-5 edge in shots. They got three saves from Olivia Glascoe and one from Nikki Johnston while Lucy Johnson was making nine for Covenant (1-2). The two schools played to a 1-1 tie in men's soccer at Covenant, Ford Emerson equalizing for the visiting Tigers (0-1-2) at 82:12 after Hunter Harrison headed in a Michael Arango corner kick for Covenant (1-0-1) at 38:22. The Scots dominated the first half with a 12-4 shots count and an 8-0 margin in corners; their final edges were 18-15 and 11-3.

• Visiting Campbellsville University blasted Tennessee Temple 9-1 in men's soccer Tuesday night, dropping the Crusaders to 0-3. The Kentucky team is 2-0.


• The USTA Mixed Doubles State Championship for Tennessee will be held this weekend in Chattanooga, and about 700 tennis players from throughout the state are expected. Play will run from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. or so Friday through Sunday at the Champions Club and Baylor School, and 65-over matches are set for 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. each day at the Racquet Club in Hixson. A player reception is scheduled for Thursday evening at the Champions Club in Rivermont.
