Rowing

• Girls Preparatory School held a ceremony Thursday to celebrate the commitment of coxswain Lauchlan Davis to row collegiately for Virginia. The Lookout Mountain native has a 3.92 grade point average and was accepted to Virginia in January -- she also visited Atlantic Coast Conference rivals Boston College and North Carolina -- and later invited by coach Kevin Sauer to join the consistently top-five national power. "This is great for Lauchlan," GPS coach Anders Swanson said. "UVA has been one of the fastest teams in the country the past decade and won the Head of the Charles this past fall." Said Davis: "Following my campus visit, I knew that UVA was the perfect school for me. It was a place for me to challenge myself and grow both academically and athletically. The girls on the team are extremely motivated and set high standards for themselves both on and off the water. UVA was the complete package -- the outstanding rowing program combined with amazing academic facilities to pursue a degree in the humanities." Said Swanson: "Lauchlan is a natural coxswain and commands her crews with great confidence and skill. Although the primary role of a coxswain is to steer the boat and make different calls during racing and practice, good coxswains are very much students of the sport and can identify technical changes which make their crew faster. Lauchlan has mastered this aspect of her role."
