The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's soccer team opened its season with a 2-1 loss Friday evening at UNC Asheville. The UNCA goals came on an Amanda Dailor header from a Kaitlyn Eckert free kick in the 19th minute and a Kennedy Garrett close-up out of a scramble in the 47th minute. Senior Crystal Mackezyk got the Mocs' goal at 77:09 after a series of passes from three freshmen -- goalkeeper Hannah Dunn to Emily Moseley to Amanda Ortiz. "We settled down and played the way we trained in the second half," Mocs coach J.D. Kyzer said in a school release. "We played against a team that is much better than it was last year. ... There were two very good teams out on the field." Both senior starter Lauren Thomas and Dunn made some athletic saves in goal for UTC, which was outshot 26-7 with a 13-6 differential in on-goal chances. Both Bulldogs scores came against Thomas, who totaled six stops. Dunn had five in 25 minutes. "We had a lot of opportunities to score late," Kyzer said. "We had one-on-ones and a free kick from the corner late in the game. We had them on the ropes and should have scored." The Mocs play Sunday at 6 p.m. EDT at Austin Peay. That is a change in the original game time.
Tennis
• The Sewanee women's tennis team has been selected to participate in the 2014 ITA National Indoor Championships Feb. 27-March 1 in Greencastle, Ind. The tournament will include eight of the top NCAA Division III teams in the country, based on preseason rankings. The others are Johns Hopkins, Carnegie Mellon, Chicago, Washington in St. Louis, Skidmore, Washington & Lee and host DePauw. The Sewanee women finished the 2014 season at No. 20 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings. They were 21-4 with a win in the NCAA tournament, and two-time Southern Athletic Association player of the year Bronte Goodhue and fellow two-time All-American Lindsey Liles are among five returning starters for coach Conchie Shackelford. Freshmen are Taylor Childress and Christina Merchant from South Carolina, Clementina Davila from Mexico City and Maggie Crumbliss from Chattanooga, which also is Goodhue's hometown.
