Guns and Hoses boxing benefit tonight and other sports news

The annual benefit boxing match between area law-enforcement personnel and area firefighters is tonight at 7 at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga's Maclellan Gymnasium. Proceeds from "Guns & Hoses; Battle of the Badges" will go to the Forgotten Child Fund and to the YMCA's Y-CAP boxing program, and general admission costs $15 with reserved ringside seats going for $30. Anyone interested in a corporate table for eight, for $300 or $500, can call Abbey Smith at 779-4719.

Basketball

* The Georgia Northwestern basketball teams lost Thursday night to the Covenant junior varsities on Lookout Mountain, 62-52 in the women's game and 82-59 in the men's. Hannah Bales scored 19 points and Tori McCord scored 15 for Covenenant's JV Lady Scots, while Bethany Logan had 18 rebounds with 12 points. Ashley Farrell had 22 points and four assists for GNTC's Lady Bobcats (0-8), who got 11 points from Chelsea Ludy and 15 rebounds from Kambria Bankston. The Bobcats (5-6) led by eight points with 6:33 to go in the first half but trailed by two at halftime and were blown out after that, as the JV Scots made 8 of 14 3-point shots and 55 percent of their shots from the field in the second half. Robby Bell scored 25 points and Gabe Tchividjian added 14 for Covenant. Dustin Stanley and Cameron Sherlin scored 12 points each for GNTC, Stanley with nine rebounds, and Devin Watkins had eight rebounds.

Academics

* Nine students in the Dalton State College athletic program finished the fall semester with grade point averages of at least 4.0 on a 4.0 scale: tennis players Haydn Fava and Adam Hornby; basketball player Deshawn Ruffin; volleyball player Anna Claudia Metzler; golfers Levi Nix, Rachel Rebne and Caroline Griffin; and cheerleaders Madison Ellis and Kaitlyn Alexander. Fava, Rebne, Ellis and Alexander are from area northwest Georgia high schools. "Our coaches have not only found really talented players but also quite a few amazing students," DSC athletic director Derek Waugh said in a school release. "Being perfect academically for a semester not only shows intelligence but hard work, time management and leadership. I am really proud of these young men and women."
