Lady Flames beat Delta, take first and other sports news

The Lee University women's basketball team led from beginning to end in pulling out a ninth consecutive victory Thursday night at Delta State, 49-34, and that propelled the Lady Flames past the 16th-ranked Lady Statesmen into first place in the Gulf South Converence. Delta State (17-4, 12-3) shot only 23.9 percent from the field, including a 14.3 percent first half in which the Cleveland, Miss., team scored only 12 points and needed six minutes to get its first. Lee shot only 30 percent and was 3-of-16 on 3-point shots but got 16 points from Hollie German and 14 from fellow senior Rachel Lockhart in the victory. German was 1-of-6 on 3s but hit nine of 10 free throws and led Lee (16-4, 12-2) in rebounds with nine. Madison Lee contributed three steals. Seneca Walton had 11 points and 13 rebounds for the Lady Statesmen. The Lady Flames were 22-of-23 as a team from the foul line. "We didn't shoot the ball well tonight, but we made 19 straight free throws in the second half and that shows toughness as a team," Lee coach Marty Rowe said in a school release.

• Delta State won the men's basketball game in the battle of Clevelands, beating the Flames from Tennessee 75-57 in rising to 20-3 overall and 13-2 in the GSC. Devin Schmidt and Willie Readus had 21 and 20 points and four assists apiece, Readus with eight rebounds, for the Statesmen. For Lee (8-12, 4-10), Corey Billingsley and Jamal Worthington scored 11 points each, Worthington with three blocked shots, and Chad Lee had eight points and seven rebounds.

• Dalton State improved to 23-3 in its inaugural basketball season with a 72-58 victory Thursday night at Faulkner University in Montgomery. LaDaris Green had 19 points and 20 rebounds to lead the Roadrunners, while Preston Earle and Demetrice Jacobs scored 12 points each and Ricky Sears added 11. Cyrille Sanjon led Faulkner with 16.
