Sewanee women's basketball team rallies past Generals 53-47

A little rusty after a three-week layoff, the Sewanee women's basketball team trailed by nine points at halftime in resuming play Tuesday but rallied and won 53-47 over visiting Washington & Lee. Sewanee's Paige Lowe led all scorers with 13 points but was the only double-figure scorer for the Tigers (6-4), who shot 35.2 percent from the field while the Generals (3-5) shot 38.5 percent -- 26.7 in the second half. Casey Hassett had seven rebounds and Jamie Chauvin had five assists for Sewanee. Paige Corvino paced W&L with 12 points and three steals.

• The University of Pikeville (Ky.), ranked third in NAIA Division I, overran visiting Tennessee Temple 123-74 on Tuesday as Bruce Reed scored 31 points, Chris Cantino had 13 rebounds with 15 poins and Elisha Justice contributed nine steals and eight assists. The Bears (11-1) shot 56.9 percent from the field, grabbed a 49-29 edge in rebounds and benefited from 30 Temple turnovers. Jordan Brown scored 16 points and Elliot Johnson added 15 on 7-of-10 field-goals shooting for the Crusaders (7-8).

• Tickets remain for the Athens (Tenn.) Area Chamber of Commerce benefit dinner on June 23 with former Georgia football star Herschel Walker as the featured speaker. They cost $50 and are available through www.athenschamber.org and 423-745-0334. The 6 p.m. dinner will be in the McMinn County High School gym. Walker set an NCAA freshman rushing record and led the Bulldogs to the national title in 1980 and went on to All-America glory all three years of his college career and 10 NCAA records before he finished as a junior, when he won the Heisman Trophy. He then starred professionally in the USFL and moved to the NFL and led that league in rushing as a Dallas Cowboy in 1986.

• The Chattanooga Auburn Club will host a gathering Monday to watch the BCS national championship football game. The event is set for Beef O'Brady's in the Snow Hill Village shopping center in Ooltewah, beginning at 8 p.m., and all AU alumni and fans are invited to watch the battle against Florida State.
