Brett Patterson of McMinnville and Middle Tennessee State golf teammate Payne Denman won the 44th annual Tennessee Four-Ball Championship on Sunday, beating Brendon Caballero and Mitch Thomas 4 and 3 at The Grove in College Grove, Tenn. Patterson and Denman won the first four holes in the final match and held on for the victory. They won 5 and 4 in the opening round but needed 19 holes for a quarterfinal victory over Stoney Crouch and Austin Swafford. The MTSU duo began their semifinal match against Lucas Tabor and Bodie Bible on Saturday but had to finish winning it Sunday morning, 4 and 3, before taking on Caballero and Thomas.

Football

• The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga's season-opening football game at Central Michigan on Thursday, Aug. 28, officially has been set for a 7 p.m. kickoff and will be able to be viewed on ESPN3, according to a UTC release Monday evening. CMU is in Mount Pleasant, Mich. The Mocs' next game and home opener will be Sept. 6 against Jacksonville State.

Auto Racing

• Cynthia Warnock, often the fastest driver as well as the only female adult competitor at the Brainerd Optimist Drag Strip, was the Super Pro winner Saturday night in the dragster powered by a modified 632 big-block Chevrolet engine, owned and prepared by her father, Ronnie Warnock. Cynthia, who began racing at the strip 21 years ago at age 15, covered the one-eighth mile in 4.67 seconds at 149.50 mph for the low elapsed time and top speed of the meet. The Super Pro runner-up was William Hill from Estill Springs with a 6.27-second run on a 6.25 dial in a 1998 Camaro SS. Ray Zoomstein from Harrison won the Foot Brake class with a 7.85 run on a 7.83 dial in a 1965 Valiant; Chattanooga's Michael Garner was second with a 7.07 on a 7.05 in a 1956 Chevy. Jake Clayton of Ooltewah was the Junior Dragster winner with an 8.18 on an 8.15, with Kaleb Winers of Soddy-Daisy second with an 8.99 on an 8.98.

Soccer

• The Chattanooga Football Club under-14 girls' team won the Tennessee State Soccer Association Division II championship and will play this week in the Region III President's Cup tournament in Decatur, Ala. It starts Thursday. The u-14 girls representing the CFC Academy include Lauren Barcelona, Lainee Bohannon, Avery Engles, Maddie Ferrel, Arielle Fortune, Olivia Hoffman, Lily Hopping, Lindsay Hunkapillar, Renee Hutton, Julia Kaset, Lily Oren, Carly Pifer, Maddie Reap, Carmen Ross, Hope Sanders, Olivia Tawzer and Lynn Wright. The coaches are Jason Kaset and Hank Hopping.

Swimming

• Eighteen meet records were set Saturday in the annual Ringgold Summer Splash meet for area swim clubs, including nine by the host Ringgold TigerSharks. Jon Lancaster set three individual records and helped set two relay marks in the boys' 15-18 age group: the 100 freestyle, 100 individual medley and 50 backstroke and the 200 medley and free relays. Will Gurley was involved in both of those relays and set individual records in the 50 free and 50 butterfly. The TigerSharks also set the 12-under 200 medley relay record, and Evan Wingrove set the 25 back standard for 8-under boys. Reece Gallagher in 9-10 boys' 50 breaststroke, 100 IM and 50 backstroke and anchoring the 12-under free relay and Bella Lee in 8-under girls' 25 breast represented Fort Oglethorpe in breaking meet records, and the Cleveland Aqua Tigers' Grayson Payne set marks in the 11-12 girls' 100 IM, 50 back and 50 fly. The other new record went to June Phang of PKNS in 9-10 girls' 25 breast.
