Covenant wins baseball doubleheader

Covenant College beat North Carolina Wesleyan 10-0 and 5-2 in USA South baseball Saturday on Lookout Mountain.

Will Cleland was 3-for-5 with three stolen bases and three RBIs in the second game for the Scots (6-1, 3-0), when Z Arima was 3-for-4 and scored twice and Alhanon Miller and Chris Rollins handled the pitching.

Garrett Kriston allowed five hits and struck out 10 in his eight innings in game one, while David Lockwood and K.C. Simons each was 3-for-5 with an RBI, Scott Gillespie was 2-for-3 with two doubles, two RBIs and three runs scored and Perry Rigby also had two hits and two RBIs. Rollins and Will Carlton each had two hits as well, and Simons and Cleland each scored twice.

* Bryan 3-12, Truett-McConnell 1-1: At Dayton, Cody Rhinehart went 6-for-8, providing two RBIs with his four second-game hits, as the Lions rose to 10-9 overall and 3-0 in the Appalachian Athletic Conference. Hunter Lamoureux and John Cain combined on a two-hitter after Tristan Speak pitched a six-hitter, allowing only an unearned run.

Grant Zawadzki tripled, singled and scored twice in the first game, and Justin Morhardt homered and then homered again while going 3-for-4 with four RBIs in game two. Tyler Latham also was 3-for-4 in the series finale, and Preston King was 2-for-3 with a homer and three RBIs.

* Lee 7-0, West Georgia 1-1: At Cleveland, the host Flames had 15 hits in the first game of the Gulf South Conference doubleheader but got all their runs in the fifth inning, when Cameron Brewster and Siosi Poti had two-run hits and Zacary Hawkins and Josh Silver had one-run hits. Derrick Pitts was 4-for-5, Hawkins and Silver each had three hits, Brewster had two and Jeremy Stawychny pitched a nine-inning four-hitte with eight strikeouts.

Nikolay Uherek threw a three-hitter in the seven-inning second game for Lee (10-5), but Harrison Waller's fifth-inning sacrifice fly held up for the win. Brewster was 2-for-3 in the loss.

* Jackson State 11-1, Cleveland State 3-4: At Cleveland, the host Cougars salvaged the final game of the weekend TCCAA series as Josh Morgan held the potent Generals to four hits in six innings and Brandon Leonard pitched a hitless seventh. Dalton Rogers was 3-for-3 with an RBI, Chris Caffrey was 2-for-3 with an RBI and Anthony Hunt drove in the other two runs for the Cougars (10-7).

Blake Rowlett was 3-for-4 with a grand slam and another RBI for Jackson State in Saturday's first game, when Cameron Strickland was 2-for-2 with two walks and an RBI and Janson Roberson and Jake Wright each had two hits also for Cleveland State. Strickland, Evan Speicher, Rogers and Roberson had two hits apiece in Friday's 14-4 loss; the Generals' Kyle Blackburn was 4-for-4, hitting for the cycle with five RBIs.

* Birmingham-Southern 14-15, Sewanee 2-3: At Sewanee, Ben Clune had two hits and an RBI in the first game and Zack Sutton had an RBI double and scored in the second as the 5-3 home team's highlights in the Southern Athletic Association doubleheader.
