UTC's Melchionna wins 800 at USF and other sports news

University of Tennessee at Chattanooga freshman Maddison Melchionna won the women's 800-meter run with teammates Jessica York and Rebecca Greenwall third and fourth in the USF Invitational track and field meet as the Mocs opened their outdoor season Friday in Tampa, Fla. It was the first collegiate meet for Melchionna, who's from Afton, Tenn. Her 800 time was 2 minutes, 13.75 seconds; York and Greenwall finished in 2:17.34 and 2:17.48. Senior Nathan Wanuch led the UTC men on the meet's first day with a second-place 9:30.89 in the 3000 steeplechase. James Stovall was sixth in the triple jump, Mark Cole and Paul Stuart were sixth and ninth in the 1500, and Iman Isang was ninth in the 110 hurdles. Gabby Cader was seventh in the 400 hurdles.

Golf

• Led by Jordan Britt with a 76 that tied her for eighth place, the UTC women's golf team is 11th at 325 after the first round of the 14-team 3M Jaguar Intercollegiate tournament Friday at Forest Hills Golf Course at Augusta, Ga. Vanderbilt, ranked 14th in the nation, shot 299 for a 10-shot lead over second-place East Tennessee State. UTC's Sarah Dolmovich, playing as an individual, is tied for 39th at 81, while Agathe Sauzon, Emily McLennan and Porsche Campbell are tied for 48th at 83, one shot ahead of teammate Isabella Loza.

• Gardner-Webb's Blake Maum from Chattanooga and Baylor School was the Big South Conference men's golf freshman of the week as announced Thursday. He won the Bash at the Beach by five strokes with a 9-under-par 204 (70-65-69) in the 54-hole event at the Surf Golf and Beach Club at North Myrtle Beach, S.C. The Runnin' Bulldogs tied for fourth.

Basketball

• The Tennessee Temple men's basketball team ended its season Thursday night with a 98-71 loss to second-seeded Union University in the National Christian College Athletic Association Mid-East Region semifinals at Bluefield, Va. Elliot Johnson had 22 points and 14 rebounds and Darius Davis and Hampton Mack scored 15 and 13 points for Temple (21-13), while Ashanti Day and Corieon Pearson scored 21 and 20 for Union, a provisional NCAA Division II member. Top-seeded Bluefield beat Hiwassee 83-67 behind 21 points, six assists and three steals from Kearsten Marion. Howie Meadows and David Lane led Hiwassee (6-19) with five and four 3-point baskets and 17 points apiece. Temple's Lady Crusaders took on No. 1-ranked Lee University in the women's NCCAA Mid-East regional late Friday night in Jackson, Tenn.

Softball

• Piedmont College freshman Allison Vaughn from Heritage High School in Ringgold was 3-for-6 with a home run and two walks as the Lady Lions won 8-1 and 3-2 in eight innings in USA South softball Thursday at LaGrange. Then she went 3-for-6 again as Piedmont (18-2, 12-0) beat Salem College twice Friday. She's batting .452 with 10 extra-base hits in 20 games.

Lacrosse

• Centre College senior Sarah Mastey from GPS assisted on the first goal of the match and scored the second plus another goal as the Colonels beat Sewanee 10-4 in Southern Athletic Association women's lacrosse Thursday night at Danville, Ky. Audrey Powers from GPS also scored for Centre (5-1, 2-0) in the program's first win over the Tigers (5-4, 2-1). Chelsea Staunton scored three of Sewanee's goals, and Crawford Horan made 16 saves.

Volleyball

• East Hamilton setter/hitter Emma Lenoir is a first-team selection on prepvolleyball.com's "Sophomore 79" list of the top 79 10th-grade players nationally. Lenoir, whose mother is the Lady Hurricanes' head coach, is an all-around player who last season totaled 666 kills, 338 digs, 307 assists and 64 aces. She made the Tennessee Sports Writers Association all-state team and was voted co-most valuable player in District 5-AAA.

Equestrian

• Sewanee equestrian performers Elizabeth Corey, Linnea Carver and Megan Hopson advanced from the IHSA regional last weekend at Maryville, Tenn., to zone competition April 5 at Berry College.
