USA South player of the year Snoopy Davidson scored twice for Covenant College as the No. 2-seeded Scots defeated North Carolina Wesleyan 2-1 in the men's soccer tournament semifinals Friday at Martinsville, Va. Covenant (14-4-2) plays today for the title against fifth seed Maryville (12-5-1), which upset No. 1 seed Greensboro. Maryville is coached by former Tennessee Wesleyan star and Chattanooga high school coach Pepe Fernandez. Davidson's first-half goal was assisted by Michael Arango.

• Jamie Samociuk's penalty kick in the 15th minute of overtime Friday night moved the Sewanee women's soccer team into the Southern Athletic Association tournament semifinals today at Danville, Ky., with a 2-1 victory over Hendrix. Kiley Ezzell gave the Tigers (13-5) the lead on an assist by Sissy Frank in the 17th minute, but Hendrix equalized with less than eight minutes to go in regulation. Sewanee outshot the Warriors 19-10. The Sewanee men fell to Centre in a 3-2 penalty-kick shootout after their scoreless tie in Conway, Ark. That left the Tigers 5-10-2. Centre had margins of 22-10 in shots and 15-3 in corner kicks, but Conrad Bandoroff made eight saves for Sewanee.

• Eight Tennessee Temple University soccer players made USCAA all-academic teams for 2014: the Lady Crusaders' Mandy Kinzie, Sage Vandergriff, Tori Ralston, Kimberlyn Warden and Courtney Elswick and the Crusaders' Josue Fernandez, Jack Fairbrother and Ryan Bolton.

Football

• Junior wide receiver Justin Houston from Bradley Central High School became Tusculum College's all-time leader in pass receptions with 215 -- with a season still to go -- as he caught four (totaling 53 yards) in the 49-10 South Atlantic Conference home victory Thursday night against Brevard. Ryan Tallent from Maryville caught 214 passes in his 2006-09 Pioneers career. Logan Cornelius from East Hamilton was 7-for-7 on extra-point kicks for Tusculum (5-5, 3-3). Houston already held a school record with three career kickoff returns for touchdowns; two were this year.

• Senior running back Randall Freeman from Ooltewah was one of four Carson-Newman football players who made CoSIDA's All-Academic all-district team for NCAA Division II football. Freeman is a graphic design major with a 3.86 GPA.

Volleyball

• Covenant's volleyball team reached the semifinals of the USA South tournament at Martinsville, Va., with a 3-0 win over Methodist on Friday. Tying a program record for wins in a season, the Lady Scots (26-9) face Meredith at 2 p.m. today with the winner playing for the championship at 6. Twins Schuyler Moore and Ginny Moore had 11 kills apiece in the 25-19, 25-18, 25-19 match against Methodist, Schuyler with 18 assists and three aces and Ginny with 14 digs, while Stephanie Kirkpatrick also set 18 assists and Chloe Carlson had 11 digs.

• Despite 15 kills and 22 digs by Diamond Stewart, the Sewanee volleyball team ended its season Friday with a 3-1 loss (25-27, 25-20, 25-15, 25-22) to Birmingham-Southern in the SAA tournament at Conway, Ark. SAA defensive player of the year Sara Jayne Sutton had 38 digs and Walker Buxton and Rachel Schuman had 18 and 17 assists for the Tigers (8-19), Schuman adding 13 digs to go with Jamie Sue Wilson's 15. BSC is 23-10. Wilson made the All-SAA second team, and Stewart received honorable mention. Sutton topped all league players with 5.56 digs per set.

• Erin Hill made 16 kills and Lauren Williams and Brooke Wilsman added 11 each as Lee University beat visiting Christian Brothers 3-1 (25-15, 25-19, 22-25, 25-10) in Gulf South volleyball Friday night. Sadie Johnson had 30 assists, 12 digs and three aces while Latrice Johnson had 19 digs with nine kills and Haley Foote had 19 assists for Lee (12-17, 9-10). Christian Brothers is 16-13, 12-7.

• Michala Askew had 28 assists and 10 digs, Karly Newman made 18 digs and Alyne Bianchi had 10 kills in Dalton State's 3-0 SSAC volleyball win Friday night at Brewton-Parker. The Lady Roadrunners are 15-10 overall, 10-7 in the league after the 25-15, 25-7, 25-22 victory.

• Senior libero Payton Tipton from Cleveland High School joined senior outside hitter Summer Kremer as King University volleyball players making the Capital One Academic All-District 3 team for NCAA Division II. Tipton has a 3.99 grade point average as an English major and has 396 digs this season, the second most in Conference Carolinas.

Baseball

• The Chattanooga Cyclones' Hunter Mercer and Devin Lancaster were voted all-tournament for the World Championship of the World Wood Bat Association event held Oct. 23-27 in Jupiter, Fla. The tournament included 85 teams from North America and drew about 500 professional scouts and college coaches. Mercer, a Baylor School senior, batted .417 with a .583 slugging percentage while Ringgold junior Lancaster pitched five innings with no earned runs in a one-run loss. His fastball was timed at 88 mph. The Cyclones had won the 56-team Southeast qualifier.
