Helton state hall of fame's athlete of year and other sports news

Former Baylor School football player and wrestler David Helton from Chattanooga has been named 2015 male amateur athlete of the year by the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame and will be recognized on June 6 at the Omni Nashville Hotel. A linebacker at Duke, Helton started three years and led the Atlantic Coast Conference in tackles two years in a row. He was a 2014 first-team Academic All-American and the recipient of the William V. Campbell Trophy, which annually goes to college football's top overall student-athlete.

Softball

* University of Tennessee at Chattanooga softball coach Frank Reed moved within one win of 1,000 for his career with the Mocs and previously Chattanooga State as UTC defeated Lipscomb 7-4 in extra innings Wednesday at Nashville. UTC (25-8) scored three runs in the seventh inning and three in the ninth after Lipscomb (19-21) took a 4-1 lead with a two-run sixth. Reed is 999-374, including 523-307 with the Mocs, and can reach four figures in this weekend's Southern Conference series at Furman. J.J. Hamill hit a three-run home run in the seventh and Sarah Beth Roberts had a two-run double in the second extra inning. Jenny Garcia was 1-for-2 with a double and scored two runs for UTC, which used three pitchers -- senior Taylor Deason (10-3) getting the win.

* The Sewanee softball team fell to 0-20 for the season with 8-6 and 13-4 losses Wednesday to visiting Rust. Shayla Vandergriff homered and scored twice in the first game and was 3-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored for Sewanee in the second, when Caroline Holmes was 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Courtney Saunders homered and singled in the first game, and Sara Burklin matched her two hits and also had an RBI and a run scored.

Golf

* UTC junior Isabella Loza from Bucaramanga, Colombia, was the Southern Conference women's golfer of the week after leading the Mocs to the championship of their inaugural Chattanooga Classic on Monday and Tuesday. She finished fourth, a career best, at 219 for 54 holes as UTC won by 15 strokes. The Mocs open play Sunday in the conference tournament at Savannah Quarters Country Club in Pooler, Ga. UTC has won the last five SoCon tourneys and has had the medalist in each of the last four.

Baseball

* Bryan College completed a season sweep of usual regional NAIA baseball power Cumberland University with a 9-2 win Wednesday at Lebanon, Tenn. Preston King batted in three runs, Chris Jeffries and Langston Calhoun had three hits apiece and Kevin Roberts hit an early two-run homer for the Lions (29-13), who got seven innings with seven strikeouts and only five hits allowed from starting pitcher Chad Burrows. Phil Stiles had three hits and both RBIs for Cumberland (13-22).

* Tennessee Wesleyan, ranked 10th in NAIA baseball, edged visiting Faulkner 8-7 with three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning Wednesday and improved to 30-8. Ridge Hoopli-Haslam was 3-for-5 with a home run and two RBIs, Chase Edwards also was 3-for-5 with two RBIs and Jordan Garrett was 3-for-5 with one RBI for TWC, which got a home run and a double from Shell McCain and two hits also from Cody Hiefnar.

* Tusculum College scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning and edged visiting Lee University 3-2 in nonconference NAIA baseball Wednesday in Greeneville, Tenn. Trenton Hill had the only RBI hit for Lee (20-15-1), and Chris Adams was 1-for-2 and scored a run.

Lacrosse

* Sewanee won a nonconference NCAA Division III matchup of unbeaten women's lacrosse teams Wednesday, 18-14 over Piedmont, as Mallory Grimm, Sally Anne Greenwood and Relly King each had four goals and an assist, Wittney Reed had two goals and two assists and Crawford Horan made 10 saves. The Tigers are 15-0 and having the reigning Southern Athletic Association defensive player of the week in Dori Wilson. Logan Buck had four goals and Maggie McDaniel and McKynsey Douglas scored three each for Piedmont (13-1).

Tennis

* The Dalton State women's tennis team beat visiting Tennessee Wesleyan 7-2 on Wednesday at Lakeshore Park, and the NAIA's 17th-ranked Dalton State men edged the 21st-ranked Bulldogs 5-4. DSC trailed 2-1 after doubles but won two of the three singles matches that went three sets. Appalachian Athletic Conference leader Wesleyan will be hosting Sunday a Milligan men's team that has won five matches in a row, with Chattanoogan Jackson Lenoir helping lead that Buffaloes hot streak.
