Gilpin, York, Elwell win Catamount Classic events and other

John Gilpin and Jessica York led one-two finishes for the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga in the 1500-meter runs Saturday at the Catamount Classic track and field meet hosted by Western Carolina. Gilpin's personal-best 4:00.51 edged teammate Austin Casassa with Paul Stuart fifth, and UTC's Emily Drouin was second to York with Keeley Stewart eighth. The Mocs' Maddison Melchionna and Amanda Cotter were second and third in the 800. Winthrop freshman Preston Elwell from Signal Mountain won the men's javelin event Friday with a heave of 186 feet, 7 inches.

Softball

* After outscoring its TCCAA opponents 144-8 in 12 games the last three weeks, the fourth-ranked Chattanooga State softball team found the going tougher Saturday against a Walters State team receiving votes in the NJCAA Division I poll. Chattanooga State won 4-0 as Sharlene Godoy pitched a three-hitter with nine strikeouts and then lost 2-1 despite a four-hitter by Hanna Manley. The Lady Tigers (33-9, 20-2) got only two hits in game two. One of those was by Dana Horgan, who was 2-for-2 with two RBIs in the opener, which included a Sydney Sloan home run.

* LSU defeated Tennessee 7-4 Saturday evening in a Southeastern Conference softball matchup of NCAA Division I's No. 1 and No. 11 teams. Batting first and second for host Tennessee (29-11, 7-7), Tory Lewis from GPS was 1-for-2 with two RBIs and Shaliyah Geathers from East Hamilton was 2-for-4.

* Lee University beat ninth-ranked North Alabama 8-6 but then lost 8-0 in their Gulf South softball doubleheader Saturday at Florence, Ala. NiaRaye Ceasar hit two home runs and Kaylie Drew also homered, each batting in three runs, in the win for Lee (27-14, 15-10), when Lexie Dean and Dominique Hannah matched them with two hits and scored two runs and one with an RBI apiece. Holley Gray was 2-for-2 in game two, when Hillary Carpenter of UNA (31-7, 16-6) allowed only three hits.

* The Covenant College softball team ended a 14-game losing streak by winning 9-1 and 11-6 in Saturday's USA South games at Mary Baldwin. Jordan Brett was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored in game one and was 4-for-4 with three of each in game two, when she became the first Lady Scot ever to hit for the cycle. Also for Covenant (11-21, 4-18), Kasey Hart homered and singled in each game, drove in five runs in the second and scored five in the doubleheader, and Shannon Schmitt had two hits in each game. She had two RBIs in the opener, when Cris Gant pitched a five-inning one-hitter, and Madison Quirk had two hits and two RBIs in the rematch.

* Birmingham-Southern won 8-0 and 13-0 with a one-hitter by Bethany Fronk and a no-hitter by Taylor Harkins in two five-inning Southern Athletic Association softball wins Saturday over visiting Sewanee. Micaela Beck was 2-for-3 with two RBIs in the first game for the Panthers (24-6-1, 13-2-1), and Alyssa Statham was 2-for-2 with two doubles and four RBIs with Taylor Bassett 2-for-3 with two doubles and two RBIs in game two.

* Heritage High School's Shea Headrick has found a new college home. The standout shortstop had signed with Tennessee Temple but lost the scholarship when the school decided to close its Chattanooga campus. After several tryouts she has signed with Point University in West Point, Ga. "The Point offer came through because Tanner Moore, our assistant baseball coach, knew the coaches there," Heritage coach Steve Chattin said. "She received an offer from Bryan also, but she thought Point was the best deal for her. Shea is extremely relieved and we're very proud of her."

Lacrosse

* Led by eight goals and two assists from Mallory Grimm, the Sewanee women's lacrosse team rose to 16-0, 7-0 in the SAA, with a 16-9 win Saturday at Birmingham-Southern. That became the first Sewanee team to finish a regular season undefeated since the 8-0 football Tigers in 1963, and the lacrosse streak of 24 wins going back to last year is the longest in school history. Grimm's goal total tied the program record. Katie Riddle had two goals and two assists and Sally Anne Greenwood and Relly King each had two goals and one assist for the Tigers, who got 10 saves from Crawford Horan. Ashley Shepherd scored five goals for BSC (3-8, 2-5).

Baseball

* Chattanooga Lookouts president and general manager Rich Mozingo will be the guest speaker for the Chattanooga Quarterback Club's noon luncheon meeting Monday at Finley Stadium, and the public is invited. Attendance costs $10 with a meal, $4 without. The Lookouts began their season Thursday and will open their home schedule Wednesday night against Birmingham.

Basketball

* The Chattanooga Area Basketball Club is holding its inaugural CABC Showcase this Saturday at Baylor School for area boys' players from the 2015, 2016 and 2017 high school graduating classes, beginning at 9:45 a.m. with a motivational address by three-time NBA champion Dickey Simpkins (Chicago Bulls). There will be a combine from 10 to 11:30 a.m. and competitive drills and showcase games from noon to 2 p.m., following lunch and a talk from Covenant College coach Kyle Taylor. Eight colleges have confirmed having representatives present, and at least a couple more are expected, according to CABC executive director Daniel Gilbert.
