The five-time defending champion University of Tennessee at Chattanooga trails Furman by five shots after the first round of the Southern Conference golf tournament Sunday at Savannah Quarters Country Club at Pooler, Ga., but the margin was 10 strokes after nine holes. Furman, which is listed 26th and 31st nationally in two major rankings, shot a 289 with Alice Chen tied for first place individually at 70, Taylor Totland tied for third at 71 and two teammates sharing 11th at 73. UTC, ranked in the mid-70s, is at 294 with Emily McLennan tied for fifth at 72, Agathe Sauzon tied for seventh at 73, Megan Woods in the 11th-place mix and Cristina Perez tied for 16th at 75. Isabella Loza had a 78 for the Mocs' drop score. Western Carolina is third at 298, one shot better than Samford in the nine-team field. Mercer's Hannah Mae Deems is at 70 with Chen.

* Emily Javadi from Chattanooga and Baylor School was the medalist with a 36-hole 152 for Sewanee in the Methodist Invitational women's golf tournament this past weekend at Fayetteville, N.C. The Tigers' Alison Eleey tied for 12th at 165 and Brook Vann also made the top 20 with a 174.

Boxing

* Chattanooga native Ryan Martin improved to 12-0 as a professional boxer with a fourth-round knockout of Mikito Soto in their lightweight bout Saturday night in San Juan, Puerto Rico, but Soto's rough style resulted in a minor cut requiring three stitches for Martin. The Central High School graduate, now living in Cleveland, Ohio, scored two knockdowns before being awarded his seventh KO as a pro. He is supposed to fight again on May 9 in Houston but will have to be cleared medically.

Softball

* After winning both games of Saturday's doubleheader in Greenville, S.C., the UTC softball team sustained its first Southern Conference loss of the season Sunday against Furman, 6-5. UTC (27-9, 8-1) climbed out of a 5-2 hole with Nicole Osterman's home run in the sixth inning and Sarah Beth Roberts' two-run shot in the seventh, but the Paladins (20-21, 3-6) got two singles and a sacrifice fly off Taylor Deason (10-4) in the bottom of the seventh for the win. They had overcome a 2-0 deficit with a four-run third. Roberts, who was 6-for-7 on Saturday, was 2-for-4 with three RBIs Sunday for the Mocs, and Anyssa Robles was 2-for-2 after driving in four runs the day before.

* Annie Aldrete's three-run home run sparked 11th-ranked Tennessee past No. 1 LSU in Southeastern Conference softball Sunday, 8-5. Lexi Overstreet also homered as the Lady Vols (30-11, 8-7) salvaged the last game of the weekend series. Aldrete was 2-for-3 with another run to go with her 31st career homer, fifth most in program history. Shaliyah Geathers from East Hamilton had an RBI single and scored twice for Tennessee, and Tory Lewis from GPS walked and scored a run in the leadoff spo.

* Lee University won its Gulf South Conference weekend softball series in Florence, Ala., with an 8-1 victory Sunday over North Alabama, which is ranked No. 9 in NCAA Division II. UNA (31-8, 16-7) managed only two hits and an unearned run off Angie Hughes (13-5). Kaylie Drew, NiaRaye Ceasar, Holley Gray and Rachel Polacek homered in the fifth inning for Lee (28-14, 16-10), and Drew added a sacrifice fly while Gray and Polacek each had another hit and another score. Amanda Lynn and Lexie Dean had two hits and one run apiece, Lynn with an RBI.

* The visiting Walters State softball team won 4-3 and 8-1 over fourth-ranked Chattanooga State on Sunday, knocking the Lady Tigers out of first place in the TCCAA. Katy Richardson had two RBIs, Izzy McCurry was 2-for-3 with a homer and Dana Horgan was 2-for-3 with a double and a run in the first loss for the Lady Tigers (33-11, 20-4), and Shannon Plese was 3-for-4 and Sydney Sloan had an RBI double in the finale.

* Columbia State won 9-1 and 10-1 in TCCAA softball Sunday at Cleveland State. Kari Gipson homered twice and drove in five runs in the first game and Kaitlyn Miller had a homer and four RBIs in game two for the Lady Chargers (22-9, 17-3). Miranda Smith and Courtni Hammers had the RBIs for Cleveland State (5-23, 4-22).

* Birmingham-Southern defeated visiting Sewanee 11-0 and 9-0 with a no-hitter and a two-hitter in two five-inning SAA softball games Sunday. Brittany Fronk pitched the no-hitter with eight strikeouts for the Panthers (26-6-1, 15-2-1). Courtney Saunders hit a triple for the Tigers (0-24, 0-20) in the second game, when BSC's Micaela Beck homered, doubled, singled and drove in four runs.

Lacrosse

* The Sewanee men's lacrosse team joined the female Tigers in winning the SAA regular-season championship by winning 19-5 Sunday at Rhodes. Robbie Berndt had six goals and an assist and Peter Brown, Hayden Byrd and George Bukawyn added three goals apiece for Sewanee (9-3, 5-1), while Selby Austin made eight saves. The Tigers had a 48-22 advantage in shots.
