Swimmer Ryan earns shot at Rio Olympics and other sports news

Former McCallie School standout Sean Ryan finished second Friday in the 10-kilometer open-water swimming national competition at Miromar Lakes, Fla. That qualified him for the July 27-28 10k races at the FINA World Championships in Kazan, Russia, where the top 10 will qualify for the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. Jordan Wilimovsky of Malibu, Calif., was the men's winner Friday in 1 hour, 54 minutes, 27.928 seconds, and Ryan got the last men's Russia berth in 1:54.40.334 -- 0.006 second ahead of former Olympian Alex Meyer of Ithaca, N.Y.

Tennis

* The second-seeded University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's tennis team knocked out Western Carolina quickly, 4-0, in the first round of the Southern Conference tournament Friday at Greenville, S.C. The Mocs (18-3) secured the doubles point when Kayla Jones and Samantha Caswell won 8-1 and Kaylene Chadwell and Kelsey Coots won 8-3, and when Jones, Chadwell and Alison Storie finished their singles breezes, the match was done. UTC faces East Tennessee State in a semifinal moved to Clemson at 9 this morning. UTC's men lost 4-0 to No. 2 seed Furman.

Softball

* Brittany Kilduff pitched a four-hitter with six strikeouts and Amy Lokker was 2-for-3 with the walk-off RBI as Tennessee Wesleyan edged Truett-McConnell 1-0 for the Appalachian Athletic Conference softball tournament championship Friday at Kingsport, Tenn. That made TWC 31-7.

* Chattanooga State beat visiting Columbia State 10-2 in six innings and 9-1 in five Friday in TCCAA softball. Lindsey Stickrod ended the first game early with a three-run homer and joined Shannon Plese and Sydney Sloan in going 2-for-3 behind Sharlene Godoy's four-hit pitching. Sloan was 2-for-3 with a homer, a double and two RBIs and Courtney Styles was 1-for-2 with a three-run homer in the second game for the Lady Tigers (39-11, 26-4), with Plese and Katy Richardson each 2-for-3 with a combination of three RBIs and three runs. Hanna Manley was the winning pitcher.

* Brenau lost 2-1 and won 5-4 in Southern States softball Friday at home against Middle Georgia State. Madison Gossett from Dade County was the hard-luck pitching loser in game one, when Kelsey Payne from East Hamilton plated the Golden Tigers' run with a sacrifice fly. They rallied from a 3-0 deficit to win game two, when Madison Lacy from Dade singled in their first run after a double by Soddy-Daisy's Savannah Moore. Brenau is 32-16, 12-11 in the SSAC.

Baseball

* Bryan College won 5-1 and lost 4-3 in AAC baseball Friday at Bluefield, and first-place Tennessee Wesleyan lost 12-6 and won 7-0 at second-place Union College. Bryan (37-15, 15-10), which had beat the Rams 13-4 on Thursday with Kevin Roberts homering, driving in three runs and scoring three and Chris Jeffries (three runs) and Cody Rhinehart each collecting three hits, got a homer, a single and four RBIs in Friday's first game from Preston King and two hits in each from Roberts, with a homer, a double and two RBIs in the loss. For nationally eighth-ranked Wesleyan (36-10, 19-5), Shell McCain was 2-for-2 with a homer and three RBIs in the loss and Cody Stroud had two RBIs and Brad Carpenter, Wardy Polanco, Chase Edwards and Cody Hiefnar had two hits apiece while Tayler Saucedo pitched a one-hitter with seven strikeouts in the win.

* Cleveland State won 5-2 behind pitcher Jake Wyrick in the first game but then gave up six runs in the seventh inning and lost 7-4 to visiting Roane State in TCCAA baseball Friday. Caleb Longley was 2-for-3 with a homer, a double and two RBIs, Austin Phillips also had two RBIs and Chris Caffrey and Anthony Hunt each were 2-for-3 in the win for the Cougars (21-20). Hagen Wilkey had two RBIs and Connor Coakley and Wright Hackett each had two hits in the loss.

* Averett College beat visiting Covenant 7-6 and 12-7 in USA South baseball Friday. Alex Kerr and Will Cleland each was 2-for-4 with an RBI in the first game and added two RBIs in game two for Covenant (14-23, 10-16). Caleb Bloye batted in two runs in the opener, and Z Arima was 2-for-3 with an RBI. K.C. Simons had two hits and an RBI and Scott Gillespie was 1-for-2 with two runs scored in game two. Kevin Alvarez was 6-for-9 with three homers and eight RBIs in the doubleheader for Averett (25-12, 19-10), and Nic Futrell homered among five hits and had five RBIs.

Lacrosse

* Sewanee is hosting both sets of Southern Athletic Association lacrosse semifinals and finals this weekend as the top seeds, and the Sewanee men edged fourth-seed Birmingham-Southern 11-10 in overtime Friday. Peter Brown scored the winner from a Robbie Berndt assist for the Tigers (10-3), and those two and Jimmy Parker each had two goals and an assist while George Bukawyn had three goals and Matthew Stiefel had three assists with two goals. Selby Austin had 11 saves in the win. David Arnold and McHale Schneider had five and three goals and two assists each for the Panthers (9-7). The undefeated Sewanee women are set to play today at noon CDT against Millsaps, and both championship matches are set for noon CDT Sunday.
