University of Tennessee at Chattanooga runners Keeley Stewart, Paul Stuart and Emily Drouin were runners-up Saturday as the Southern Conference outdoor track and field meet began at Birmingham, Ala., giving them all-conference recognition. Stewart and Stuart were second in the 10,000-meter races, and freshman Drouin was second in the women's 3000 steeplechase. Anna Kate Chance was sixth in the 10k, and the Mocs' John Gilpin was seventh in the men's steeple. Twelve UTC athletes qualified for finals today: Rebecca Greenwall, Maddison Melchionna and Hannah Chamblin in the women's 800; Amanda Cotter and Jessica York in the 1500; Kiaana Howard in the 400; Austin Casassa in the men's 1500; Marquis Carter in the 800; Jacob Noorbergen in the 200; Iman Isang in the 110 hurdles; Drake Watson in the 400 hurdles, and DeQuantez Sandifer in the pole vault.

* Sewanee's Ridge Davis, Amiel Emerson and Amy Lee won events in the Southern Athletic Association track and field meet Friday and Saturday in Memphis, and Tigers earned 12 All-SAA recognitions overall. Davis won in men's javelin and Emerson in the 800-meter run, and they were on the second-place 4x400 relay team with Zach Abeles and Alec Hill. Hill was second to Emerson in the 800. Lee was first in the women's 1500 and third in the 800, while Amy Nelson was second in the hammer throw and third in the discus. Sewanee's Tyler Fishback was second in high jump.

* Carson-Newman sophomore T.J. Davis from Ooltewah finished fifth in the men's long jump Friday at the prestigious Penn Relays with a personal-best leap of 7.27 meters. That was 0.09 meters longer than his first-place jump in the South Atlantic Conference meet the previous week, and he was the top-finishing NCAA Division II jumper at Philadelphia. "To be in an environment where 39,000 people are watching the best in the nation compete, it is amazing to think our sophomore was not just able to hold his own but show he is elite," CNU coach David Needs said. "When you beat all the jumpers from the Big Ten, Big 12 and the SEC, he has shown our staff he is ready to make the next step."

Softball

* UTC's weekend SoCon softball series at Mercer has become a tripleheader today, starting at noon. It already had been changed to begin with one game Saturday evening, but thunderstorms in the Macon area forced another postponement. Mocs coach Frank Reed will be the speaker for the Chattanooga Quarterback Club's noon luncheon meeting Monday at Finley Stadium, and the public is invited. Attendance costs $10 with a meal, $4 without.

* The 11th-ranked Tennessee softball team lost this weekend's SEC series at No. 5 Alabama with a 10-3 defeat Saturday. Tennessee (36-13, 12-9) won 3-2 with a two-run Annie Aldrete home run Thursday and lost 3-1 despite a Taylor Koenig homer Friday. In Friday's game, Shaliyah Geathers from East Hamilton and Gretchen Aucoin began the seventh inning with singles for the Lady Vols, but two groundouts and a flyout ended the game. Saturday, GPS alumna Tory Lewis was 1-for-2 and scored twice.

* Christian Brothers downed Lee 5-2 in the first game of their weekend Gulf South softball series Saturday in Memphis. Dominique Hannah had the only RBI for Lee (29-17, 16-11).

Tennis

* The second-seeded UTC women's tennis team lost 4-2 Saturday morning to East Tennessee State in the SoCon tournament in South Carolina. The match was played indoors at Clemson University.

* The Sewanee tennis teams both will play for SAA championships today at Old Fort Park in Murfreesboro, after beating the Birmingham-Southern women 5-0 and the Rhodes men 5-1 in semifinals Saturday. The Sewanee women will face Berry; the men meet Millsaps.

Lacrosse

* Top-seeded host Sewanee beat Millsaps 18-8 in the Southern Athletic Association women's lacrosse semifinals Saturday and will face Rhodes in the final at noon CDT today at Puett Field. Katie Riddle and Sally Anne Greenwood each scored four goals, Riddle with an assist, Mallory Grimm and Wittney Reed had three goals apiece and combined for three assists and Crawford Horan had 11 saves for the Tigers (17-0). Sewanee also is in the men's final, against Berry, at 1 p.m. CDT at Harris Stadium.

Volleyball

* Chattanooga Christian senior setter Taylor Youell will be continuing her volleyball career at Maryville College, and CCS celebrated with her Friday. The 5-foot-5 two-year team captain and All-District 7-AA player also played some as a defensive specialist on her club team and can do well in either role for Maryville, CCS coach Brian Wood said. "We're going to miss her leadership skills," Wood said. "She was my captain for two years, and with that she had many roles and responsibilities. On the floor she ran the offense and really the defense, too." As an NCAA Division III school Maryville doesn't give athletic scholarships, but Youell is getting a "pretty big" academic scholarship. She probably will major in biology in a pre-med path. She also was recruited by NAIA schools Bryan and Montreat. "Maryville just seemed like a perfect fit," Youell said. "It's a very good school with a very good volleyball program, and it's the perfect distance from home. And I really like the coaches."

Golf

* Former Baylor School teammates Emily Javadi of Sewanee and Alyssa Brown of Centre are tied for second individually at 154 after two rounds of the SAA women's golf tournament being hosted by Sewanee at the Old Fort course in Murfreesboro. Centre is a distant second to Rhodes in the team standings, and Sewanee is fifth with Alison Eleey and Brook Vann tied for 16th at 169. Sewanee is eighth in the men's tournament.
