The Course at Sewanee made Golf Magazine's top-three list for its inaugural Golfers' Choice Awards, specifically as a hidden gem or under-the-radar delight in the Golf Gold series taking responses from "Gold Insiders" who travel a lot to play. The awards are based on 5,649 surveys received from Dec. 18 to Feb. 6. The nine-hole Sewanee course previously received a Renovation of the Year award for its recent redo by Gil Hanse, the course architect also responsible for the 2016 Olympics layout in Brazil. Listed with the mountaintop venue are Furry Greek Golf Course in British Columbia and Presidio Golf Course in San Francisco. "This nine-holer adjacent to the University of the South has been completely renovated by Gil Hanse and is a true testament to his genius," wrote John Capers III, president of the Golf Collectors Society, as quoted in a university release Saturday. "Alternate tees allow you to play the same holes. The routing is hemmed in by thousand-foot drops, creating vistas that go for miles in the picturesque Tennessee mountains. Two challenging par-5s are balanced by two par-3s that use the vistas as distractions to land on the tough greens. The fairways slant in different directions, demanding fades and draws for perfect placement."
