The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men's and women's cross country teams were both ranked in the Top 10 for team grade point average in rankings announced by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. The UTC men's team was second in the nation with a 3.72 cumulative GPA and trailed only Vanderbilt's 3.74. Mocs senior Patrick O'Brien, who recently received the Dayle May Award as the UTC athlete with the highest GPA, has maintained a 4.0 throughout college, and transfer Harry Smithers also has a 4.0. The UTC women's team tied for seventh nationally witha 3.71 GPA headlined by senior Keeley Stewart, who had a 4.0 last semester. This is the second time that both UTC cross country teams have made the Top 10 GPA list at the same time. In 2011, the UTC men led the nation and the women were sixth.

Sewanee's cross country teams earned USTFCCCA all-academic designation in NCAA Division III, the men with a 3.62 aggregate GPA and the women with a 3.61. Hudson Robb, Mark McAlister and Amy Lee received individual honors.

Baseball

Tennessee Wesleyan's 23rd-ranked baseball team used a pair of four-run innings to beat No. 1 Cumberland 13-7 on Wednesday in Athens. Third baseman Ridge Hoopi-Haslam was 3-for-4 with a home run, a triple and four RBIs, and designated hitter Tim Kiene had three hits and five RBIs for TWC (3-4). Cody Albright pitched six innings for the win against the defending NAIA national champions; he allowed six runs on seven hits with six strikeouts.

Tennessee Temple scored three runs in the eighth and one in the ninth in winning 4-3 on Wednesday in NCCAA baseball at Hiwassee. Trey Hill was 4-for-4 with a home run, a double and two runs scored for the victorious Crusaders (3-1), while Micah Wyatt and Clay O'Shields each was 2-for-4. Hunter Giles pitched the last three innings for the win. For Hiwassee, TK Kemper was 3-for-4 and Matt Taylor was 2-for-4, each with a run and an RBI.

Basketball

Tennessee Wesleyan raced to a 48-26 first-half lead and cruised to an 89-59 Appalachian Athletic Conference women's basketball win over Columbia (S.C.) on Wednesday. Jenna Adams and Armeka Booker totaled 19 and 15 points and 13 and 11 rebounds for TWC, which is ranked No. 9 in NAIA Division II. Former Sequatchie County standout Melanie Barker had 18 points and five assists and Shira Buley had eight assists for the Lady Bulldogs (24-2, 16-2), who shot 49.4 percent from the floor while holding Columbia to 38.5 percent. The Wesleyan men improved to 13-13 by winning 96-72 at Fisk.

Bryan College won both games in an AAC basketball doubleheader at Montreat. The Lady Lions are 18-7, 12-5 after a 71-60 victory; the Lions are 14-10, 8-7 after winning 75-68.

TJ Cox made a layup and tacked-on free throw with 1.2 seconds left to give Covenant College a 75-72 home USA South basketball victory over Piedmont on Wednesday, and the Covenant women almost pulled off a big upset but fell 56-53 to the 16-5 visitors from Demorest, Ga. Cox scored 20 points with 4-of-6 3-point shooting and Nate Frierson added 12 points for the Scots (8-14, 6-6), while Trae Gaines had 19 points and 11 rebounds for Piedmont (11-10, 6-5). Abbey Bailey and Liz Dougherty scored 12 points each and Haley Soles had six assists with 11 points for the Lady Scots (3-20, 2-12).

Roane State fended off a TCCAA women's basketball upset Wednesday at Cleveland State with Shauntae Brown's short shot with 3.8 seconds left after rebounding a teammate's missed free throw at 6.4. That gave Roane a 61-60 win and a 15-1 league record with a 22-5 overall mark. But Cleveland State won the men's game 79-61 as Darrion Leslie had 20 points and seven rebounds and Alex Watkins claimed 11 rebounds. Jamesha Mosley had 19 points and seven rebounds and Jlynn Majors had six assists for the Lady Cougars (12-10, 8-7).

Softball

Lee University won 4-3 and 15-9 in Tennessee Wesleyan's season softball openers Wednesday in Cleveland, raising the Lady Flames' record to 8-2. Dominique Hannah was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and Lexie Dean was 2-for-3 with one RBI for Lee in the opener, when Rachel Percy was 2-for-3 with an RBI for TWC. Percy and teammates Stephanie Bridges and Alyssa King each homered in game two, when Greason McCaslin was 2-for-3 and matched Percy and Bridges with two RBIs. For Lee in that game, NiaRaye Ceasar and first-game winning pitcher Leigh Beatenbough each had three RBIs and Ceasar, Hannah and Kaylie Drew had three hits apiece, while Dean was 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs and Emily Dagnan homered.
