Boxing tonight at Red Bank and other sports stories

Amateur boxers from Tennessee, Georgia and Alabama will be in action this evening at the Luken boxing gym behind Red Bank High School. Hosted by the Red Bank Boxing Club, the "St. Valentine's Day Massacre" will begin at 5 p.m., and spectators are welcome. Running

UTC's Paul Stuart and John Gilpin finished second and third behind Liberty's Titus Koech in the men's 3,000-meter run Friday night at the Samford Invitational indoor track and field meet in Birmingham. Stuart at 8:33.16 was less than a second behind Koech, and Gilpin followed at 8:34.46. Mocs freshman Jacob Noorbergen was eighth in the 200, and Rebecca Greenwall in the mile and Amanda Cotter in the 800 were 10th in women's races.

Baseball

Trenton Hill's three-hit, seven-strikeout pitching in eight innings led Lee University to a 2-0 Gulf South Conference baseball win Friday against visiting Union University. Kyle Briner added two strikeouts in a hitless ninth inning for his third save of the season for the Flames (7-0, 1-0). Luke Toms went 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and a run scored, and Hill also was 2-for-4. Andres Nelo tripled and scored in the two-run third.

Andrew Beck's two-out single scored Alex Kerr from second base in the bottom of the 11th inning Friday on Lookout Mountain, giving Covenant College a 2-1 win over Methodist in the USA South baseball opener for both teams. Scott Gillespie was 2-for-4 with a third-inning RBI for the Scots (4-0 overall), Luke Harvey was 2-for-5 and Garrett Kriston and Alec Mitchell pitched a combined seven-hitter with 10 strikeouts. Lucas Scott had two hits for Methodst (2-2).

The Cleveland State baseball team scored seven runs in the first two innings and won 11-4 Friday against visiting Vincennes. Wright Hackett was 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI, Caleb Longley had two hits and two RBIs and Chris Caffrey homered and drove in three runs for the Cougars (4-1). Janson Roberson also had two hits, Anthony Hunt had two RBIs, Shelden Brogden scored three times and Hagen Wilkey tripled and scored twice.

Bryan College won 6-5 and 10-4 in a home baseball doubleheader Friday against Cornerstone University. That made the Lions 9-1.

Softball

Alex Williams doubled in two runs in a four-run sixth inning as Union University edged Lee 4-3 in Gulf South softball Friday in Cleveland. All four runs were unearned, and Angie Hughes took the pitching loss despite allowing only two hits and striking out 11 batters. Leigh Beatenbough was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs for Lee (8-3).

Leslie Hinkle was 4-for-6 with a home run and three RBIs as Point University beat Tennessee Temple 4-2 and 8-5 in softball Friday at Warner Park. Cayley Shoemaker was 3-for-4 and scored both Temple runs in the first game, when Taylor Tsai tripled. Jillian McGill was 2-for-3 with an RBI in the first game and doubled in two runs in the rematch.

Cleveland State began its softball season Friday by losing 6-1 and winning 4-2 against visiting Gadsden State.

Basketball

The Sewanee basketball teams lost 64-38 to the Millsaps women and 57-56 to the male Majors in a Southern Athletic Association doubleheader Friday night at Jackson, Miss. Millsaps' Myles Moore hit two free throws with 36 seconds remaining to produce what proved to be the final margin in the men's game, as Sewanee's Marcellus Caldwell missed a jump shot with five seconds to go. Moore led Millsaps (6-15, 2-8) with 13 points. Brody Stone had 17 and Jorden Williams scored 16 for the Tigers (14-7, 8-2), while Keshonn Carter had 12 points, nine rebounds and four steals. Hannah McCormack's nine points led the Sewanee women (11-9, 3-7). Beverly Holmes had 22 plus five steals for Millsaps (16-5, 8-2).

The Georgia Northwestern basketball teams both lost to Southern Crescent Tech on Friday at Rossville. Devin Watkins scored 18 points and Garret McAllister added 12 in the Bobcats' 81-78 overtime loss, when Dustin Stanley had 10 rebounds. Ashley Farrell scored 15 points with five 3-pointers for the Lady Cats, who got 12 from Chelsea Ludy, 11 from Kambria Bankston and nine plus 14 rebounds from Holly Mount.

Lacrosse

George Bukawyn scored five goals as the Sewanee men's lacrosse team opened its season with an 11-5 win Friday against visiting Colorado College. Hayden Byrd and Cotter Brown added two goals apiece, Peter Brown had three assists and a goal and Selby Austin had nine saves for the Tigers.
