Hueske, Boclair head All-SAA Tigers and other sports news

Caty Hueske and diver Charles Boclair III were first-team All-Southern Athletic Association swimmers from Sewanee after last week's conference meet, and four teammates were second-team men's or women's choices with six other Tigers receiving honorable mention. First-teamers had to win an event in the meet, and Hueske had two firsts and a second in individual competition. The Sewanee second-teamers were David Evans, Brian Glatt, Michael Whitehead and Carolyn Rice, and Jackson Cromer, Courtney Moore, Edward Dennis, Erin Neil, Chloe Stevenson and Anna Thorson earned All-SAA honorable mention.

Baseball

* Piedmont College improved to 7-2 overall and in the USA South with two one-run baseball victories Saturday against visiting Covenant, which won the first game of the series Friday at Demorest, Ga. Piedmont won 5-4 and 3-2 in 14 innings, the latter game ending on a bases-loaded bloop single by Daniel Lindsey. In the first game Saturday, the host Lions led 5-0 until a four-run sixth inning for the Scots, who then had tying runs in scoring position each of the last three innings but couldn't get them home. Perry Rigby was 3-for-4 with two doubles and Caleb Bloye was 2-for-4 with an RBI in that game for Covenant (6-3, 3-3). In the finale, Will Carlton was 3-for-6 with an RBI double and Scots pitchers Jonah Paul and Alec Mitchell each allowed six hits and one earned run in 6 2/3 innings, with six and four strikeouts.

* Lee University's 1-1 suspended baseball game from Friday night did not resume Saturday, and the third game of the Flames' Gulf South Conference series against visiting Alabama-Huntsville was canceled as well. The 1-1 game was scheduled for seven innings after a 2-0 UAH win, but it was in the ninth when snow forced the suspension.

* The Chattanoooga Lookouts have scheduled team job fairs for March 7 and 14 at AT&T Field, both from 9 a.m. until noon. The first one will be addressing the hiring of suite serveres, club servers and vendors, all of whom must be at least 18 year old, as well as suite cooks, picnic servers, concessions workers, grill cooks and concession cashiers. On March 14 club officials will be interviewing prospective bat boys, box office attendants, ticket takers, team store attendants, ushers, press box staff and promotions team members, plus mascot. All workers must be at least 16. Candidates are encouraged to fill out online applications and bring them to the event. The team's first game is April 15.

Tennis

* The University of Tennessee men's tennis team defeated North Alabama 5-2 on Saturday at the Racquet Club in Hixson. The Mocs swept the doubles matches for that team point and clinched the team victory before UNA's Guillaume Dechoz and Brendon Herrmann won three-set matches at Nos. 1 and 2 singles. Lucas Plesky, Nic Wilson and John Peacey won in both doubles and singles for UTC, and Gino Delavalle was another singles winner.

Softball

* Lincoln Memorial freshman Brianna Taylor from Arts & Sciences improved her pitching record to 2-1 with a four-hitter in a 3-0 win Friday against Stillman in the St. Leo Invitational tournament in Florida, but she went to 2-2 with a 4-3 loss Saturday against a Lynn team that beat the Railsplitters 13-2 on Friday. Taylor struck out 11 batters in her shutout.

Running

* The Scenic City Half Marathon will be held Saturday morning from Finley Stadium, along with a 5-kilometer race and the Charity Challenge benefiting eight area organizations: Chambliss Center for Children, Chattanooga Community Kitchen, Chattanooga Room in the Inn, Children's Advocacy Center for Hamilton County, Girls on the Run, Secondlife Chattanooga, Special Olympics Tennessee Southeast Region and the YMCA of Chattanooga. Each entrant designates the charity of his of her choice to receive $7.50 of the $80 half marathon fee or $5 of the $40 5k fee. Registration is available at www.active.com or at the packet pickup Friday at Finley, from 4 to 8 p.m. No registration will be accepted for the 13.1-mile race Saturday morning, but 5k signups will be allowed from 6:30 to 7:30 a.m. The longer race starts at 8, the 5k at 8:15. UTC runner Paul Stuart and Athens, Ga., resident Sydney Marshall were the half marathon winners last year.

General

* UTC athletic director David Blackburn will be the guest speaker for the Chattanooga Quarterback Club's noon luncheon meeting Monday at Finley Stadium, and the public is invited. Attendance costs $10 with a meal, $4 without.
