Sewanee women in prestigious tournament and other sports news

The Sewanee women's tennis team is 3-0 this season and ranked No. 21 in the ITA listings for NCAA Division III, and they're playing this weekend in the prestigious, invitation-only ITA National Indoors tournament in Greencastle, Ind. The Tigers, who include Girls Preparatory School graduate Bronte Goodhue and Baylor alumna Maggie Crumbliss in their lineup, open today against top-seeded Johns Hopkins in the tournament. Goodhue, the team's veteran leader, is ranked 15th nationally in singles; Crumbliss is a freshman. Other teams in the tournament are Carnegie Mellon, Chicago, host DePauw, Skidmore, Washington & Lee and Washington of St. Louis.

Basketball

* The top-seeded Tennessee Wesleyan women's basketball team had no trouble Thursday morning with eighth seed St. Andrews, but the second-seeded Bryan women and fifth-seeded Bryan men were knocked out of the Appalachian Athletic Conference tournaments. Tennessee Wesleyan's men faced third-seed Truett-McConnell in the late game in Kingsport, Tenn. AAC men's player of the year Brandon Cole had 25 points and 12 rebounds and Jeff Long scored 29 points with five 3-point baskets for the Bryan men in the 82-73 loss to Reinhardt, while Tyler Yoder had 12 points and Alan Holt had 10 assists in defeat. The Lady Lions lost 67-58 to seventh seed Milligan despite 24 points, 13 rebounds and four steals from Kristin Lane and 11 points apiece from Keila Formont and Megan Billingsby. The TWC Lady Bulldogs went to 26-3 with a 70-43 victory featuring 23 points and 12 rebounds from Armeka Booker, 14 points from player of the year Jenna Adams and eight rebounds from Shira Buley. They face Point at 2 p.m. today. Point edged fourth-seeded Reinhardt 66-64 in triple-overtime despite 16 points and 13 rebounds from Dalton High School graduate April Besley and six assists from Sonoraville's Payton Smith. Monica Hammond from Bradley Central had 15 points and eight rebounds in Truett-McConnell's play-in loss Wednesday to Milligan.

* Erin Walsh tied a Lee University women's basketball single-game record with eight 3-point baskets Thursday night in a 100-48 nonconference victory over visiting Hiwassee. Walsh made her eight on 14 tries and totaled 30 points, while Emileigh Swafford scored 20 and grabbed 10 rebounds, Shelby Brown had 11 rebounds and four blocked shots and Alex Swope dealt six assists for the Lady Flames (17-8). Halei LeQuire and Dominique Stringer each scored 13 points for Hiwassee (14-18), Stringer with four steals, and Haylee Morrow added 12 points. The Lee men (15-12) beat Hiwassee 74-55 with 13 points and 11 rebounds from Chad Lee, 12 points from Jervon Johnson, 11 apiece from Tyquan Roberts and Cory Billingsley and 10 rebounds from Chase Cullen. Kaseem Davidson scored 20 points for Hiwassee (10-18).

* Dalton State's sixth-ranked NAIA Division I basketball team beat Coastal Georgia 83-59 in Southern States Athletic Conference play Thursday night. Preston Earle and Jordan Bowling scored 16 points apiece and Anthony Hilliard had 13 plus eight rebounds. Jamaine Burrey and Sean Tate scored 11 and nine points.
