UTC shines in DMR at ETSU and othyer sports news

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga won the men's distance medley relay and finished second in the women's DMR on the final day Saturday of the ETSU Invitational indoor track and field meet at Johnson City, Tenn. Mocs senior John Gilpin ran the opening 1200-meter leg for the men, and juniors Geoff Nelson and Marquis Carter ran the 400 and 800 legs before Paul Stuart in the 1600 anchored a 10:19.38 finish and a 10-second-plus victory over second-place Tennessee Wesleyan. The Mocs had another foursome -- Trevor Janssen, Drake Watson, Austin Casassa and Patrick O'Brien -- who finished sixth in 10:46.13. The UTC women's top quartet of Maddison Melchionna, Kiaana Howard, Hannah Chamblin and Emily Drouin ran a 12:35.29, trailing only Alabama State, and teammates Helenka Kis, Jasmine Shell, Chandler Rogers and Jessica York were fifth in 12:58.25. Also Saturday, senior Amanda Cotter and junior Makala Diggs were fourth in the women's 3000 and 800, respectively, and senior Rebecca Greenwall was sixth in the Mile Invitational. The Mocs' Matthew Marshall won his heat and was 11th overall in the men's 800.

Tennis

The UTC men's tennis team jumped to a 1-0 start with two victories in the three doubles matches of the Mocs' opening spring-semester contest Saturday against Middle Tennessee State at Nashboro Village in Nashville, but the Blue Raiders swept the singles and won 6-1. UTC plays Monday at nationally sixth-ranked North Carolina. John Peacey and Lucas Plesky at No. 1 and Nicklas Wingord and Luke Saunders at No. 2 were the doubles winners Saturday for UTC, by scores of 6-3 and 6-4. MTSU leads the all-time series 18-11 with 14 wins in a row now.
