Lee basketball teams sweep West Florida and other sports news

Emileigh Swafford and Shelby Brown scored 23 points apiece and Erin Walsh scored 21 as the Lee University women's basketball team beat West Florida 88-75 in a Gulf South Conference doubleheader Thursday night in Cleveland. Brown was 9-of-11 from the field, and Swafford and Walsh each was 10-for-15, whle Alex Swope delivered six assists. Lee also won the men's game, 91-75, as Chase Cullen had 25 points and 10 rebounds, Cory Billingsley and Jervon Johnson scored 20 points each and Stedmon Ford provided eight assists and four steals. Johnson hit five 3-pointers.

* Amanda Rector scored 25 points and Angel Foster had 15 points, 14 rebounds and three blocked shots as Tennessee Temple defeated visiting Florida College 73-65 in women's basketball Thursday evening. Florida College won the men's game 74-66. Bree Smith also scored 15 points for the Lady Crusaders (9-12), and Kirsten Fowler had 10 assists, nine rebounds and three steals. Toni Cox led Florida College with 20 points and 12 rebounds, and Laurie Beaty had 14 points and nine assists. Bryan Jones had 20 points and eight rebounds for the Temple men (7-15), who got 12, 11 and 10 points from Weedlens Beauvil, Cameron High and John Mark Bell and five steals from High. Dennis Gravely and Anthony Allen had 23 and 21 points and eight and 13 rebounds for the winners.

* Jordan Bowling had 19 points and 10 rebounds and Ladaris Green combined 17 points with eight rebounds, seven blocked shots and four assists in Dalton State's 77-64 Southern States Athletic Conference men's basketball game Thursday night at home against Blue Mountain. It was the seventh win in a row for the Roadrunners (17-2, 8-1), who are ranked No. 8 in NAIA Division I. Preston Earle scored 15 points with 5-of-8 3-point shooting and Sean Tate had 11 points and six assists in the win.

Football

* Northwest Whitfield quarterback Caleb Shiflett will sign to continue his football career at Tusculum College at a ceremony at the high school on national signing day Wednesday. Shiflett, a two-year starter for the Bruins, completed 172 of his 286 passes this past season for 2,222 yards, 21 touchdowns and four interceptions. As a junior he threw for 2,023 yards and 25 touchdowns. "Caleb's future is bright at Tusculum," said Northwest coach Josh Robinson. "He's only 17, so he has a lot of developing still ahead. They had a sophomore starter this season who had redshirted, and Caleb will likely redshirt and be ready to take over. They really like him as a quarterback."

Rugby

* The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's rugby team defeated Georgia 22-17 in the spring-season opener last Saturday. UTC fell behind 5-0 but scored the next 22 points and held on. Dianne Pamplona scored three times, including the winning score on a 65-meter run through several defenders. Senior captain Emily Fillmore scored a try and starred defensively, and Anastasia Sharp, Erin Mitchell and Rakerria Mines were other standouts. UTC plays Feb. 14 against North Georgia's club in Dahlonega; that team plays Feb. 1 at Georgia.
