University of Tennessee at Chattanooga volleyball coach Travis Filar announced Thursday that setter Madison Bergren from Muncie, Ind., is transferring to the Mocs from UT-Martin with three years of eligibility remaining. She was second-team all-state with 1,071 assists as a Delta High School senior and also played for the Munciana Volleyball Club during a 76-5 run, and she led UTM with 935 assists and was second in aces, fourth in digs and block solos and fifth in kills (103) last fall. Her sister Morgan is a returning two-year starter at setter for Kentucky and was a second-team All-American in 2014. "I could not be more excited to add a setter of this caliber to our program," Filar said in a UTC release. "Madison comes with great experience, having already run a college offense in the way we want to run ours. ... Her training background and experience before college also adds much to the culture of our program. ... She will compete to run our offense, and I believe we are adding an incredible teammate, student-athlete and person."

Tennis

* A Chattanooga team won the USTA 55-over 4.0 men's tennis state championship for the first time since 2004 last weekend at the West Hills complex in Knoxville. David Snyder is the captain of the team that also includes Pat Farnsley, Ken Ellinger, Randy Ball, Glen Wear, Bob Taylor, Glen Wagner, Alan Walker, Turney Thompson, Del Ottinger, Raymond Rich and Bill Harvey. They played four team matches in Knoxville -- three doubles courts against three doubles courts -- and had to win all three courts against Memphis in their last match Saturday to win the Tennessee title and advance to sectional play in September in Asheville, N.C. The Chattanoogans won 6-4, 6-4 on one court against Memphis and in three-set tiebreaks on each of the other two.

* The UTC women's tennis team was given a No. 8 final ranking in the ITA's Ohio Valley Region for 2015, one spot better than the previous year. Coach Jeff Clark's Mocs went 18-4 and finished second in the Southern Conference with a 5-1 league record. Rising senior Kayla Jones was ranked 18th in singles in the year-end region rankings after going 22-8 at No. 1.

Baseball

* Lee University pitcher Dustin Lawson was named Thursday an NCCAA first-team baseball All-American, and Flames first baseman Ben Holland was a second-team selection. Lawson, a Cleveland High School graduate, went 8-2 with a 2.52 earned run average and 69 strikeouts in 100 innings in his senior season. Holland batted .335 as a junior with 12 home runs, 15 doubles, three triples, 49 RBIs and a .994 fielding percentage. "I am really proud for Dustin," Flames coach Mark Brew said in a Lee release. "This honor represents all his hard work over his five years in our program. He turned himself into the ace of our staff this year and led us at the start of every weekend. ... Ben might have been the hottest hitter in the country the last third of the season. He was a major run producer for our team and had some huge games for us at the plate. Additionally, Ben was a key cog in a record-breaking defense." Hiwassee's Alex Huddleston was another second-team All-American.

Golf

* Georgia Northwestern remains in third place out of 13 teams but got closer to the leaders Thursday in the NJCAA Division III men's golf tournament at Chautauqua, N.Y. The Bobcats shot a 303 and are at 914, 10 shots behind defending champion Sandhills Community College of North Carolina and nine behind Cincinnati State. Lanier Guest shot a 73 and fellow freshmen Jordan Estes and Chase Cole had 74s for GNTC, which got an 82 from sophomore Drew Tankersley.

Softball

* Lee University softball coach Emily Russell officially has announced the signing of Chattanooga State All-American outfielder Courtney Crawford, which already had been reported, and also that of versatile Macy Stovall from Lambert High School in Suwanee, Ga. Stovall has played third base, first base and outfield but was the catcher most of her senior season at Lambert, where she was the team captain, batted .462 and made the Georgia Longhorn Club's all-state team. She hit .413 for a select team last summer and had a 4.0 grade point average. She had discussions with Mercer, Kennesaw State, Georgia Southern, Coker and North Georgia before deciding on Lee to "play competitive softball at a top-level university" and "help my faith prosper while I attain what I want from college," she said in a Lee release. "She is a hard-nosed player that finds ways to win, (and) she is a tremendous student that will flourish academically as well," Russell said. Of Crawford, who played on back-to-back national third-place teams at Chattanooga State, Russell said, "Courtney stood out to me every time I watched her team play. We are pleased to have someone with her experience join our outfield. We are relatively young in the outfield, and she is a very aggressive defender. ... She will fit in offensively with our style of play. She is a lefty hitter/slapper and has a good amount of speed."
