University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men's tennis coach Carlos Garcia will play for Team USA against Canada in the Sorlien Trophy competition in Toronto this weekend. It runs Friday through Sunday at the Donalda Club under the auspices of the International Lawn Tennis Club. Garcia, now 50, is a former University of Tennessee standout who just completed his 14th season at UTC. He is ranked 20th in the United States in men's 50-over singles. "I am extremely excited to represent our country in this prestigious event," Garcia said in a UTC release. "I am grateful to the USIC for choosing me to be a part of the team and look forward to some excellent competition."

Baseball

* Larry Simcox is back as an assistant baseball coach at the University of Tennessee, introduced Monday as Dave Serrano's new hitting coach. The former East Ridge, Cleveland State and Ole Miss standout - and member of the Greater Chattanooga Sports Hall of Fame - served as a Volunteers assistant from 1991 to 2007. He was on the staff with Serrano in 1995 and 1996, two years in which Tennessee reached the NCAA tournament - including the College World Series in 1995 - and he is the father of Vols shortstop A.J. Simcox. "Larry was, to me, the perfect fit," Serrano said in a news conference, as quoted by the Knoxville News Sentinel. Simcox has been running the Diamond Baseball-Simcox Academy but has to give that up. "I'm just excited to be a part of Dave's staff. I've always thought Dave is an outstanding coach," the KNS story quoted Simcox, who was on the staff for eight NCAA tourney teams and three that got to Omaha. Eleven of the teams with which he worked hit better than .300. This year's 24-26 Tennessee team was last in the Southeasten Conference in hits, runs and RBIs.

Wyrick stuck out eight batters in his three innings for the first-place Mojo (9-1), who will face the second-place Cleveland Bulls this Sunday at Lee University. The Mojo scored 10 runs in the first inning against East Ridge, including a two-run double by Clerc and two RBI singles by Dustin Crumley.
