Chattanooga FC ties Knoxville Force 1-1 and other sports news

The Chattanooga Football Club battled to a 1-all tie Saturday night in its National Premier Soccer League Southeast Conference game against the Knoxville Force at Regal Stadium in Knoxville. Chattanooga FC (9-1-1, 5-0-1) scored in the 28th minute on a penalty kick by Leo De Smedt, and the Force (0-4-2) scored on a header about 10 minutes later. The Chattanooga side now has 16 points in league play going into a Tuesday home match against the Atlanta Silverbacks Reserves at 7:30 p.m. in Finley Stadium.

* Ashley Whitney from Nashville, an Olympic gold medalist in the women's 800 freestyle relay, was the overall winner of the 4.5-mile option Saturday morning in the 10th annual Rat Race open-water swim to Coolidge Park in the Tennessee River. The 35-year-old Whitney finished the course in 1 hour, 18 minutes, 7.9 seconds. Andy Klenzak, 48, of Atlanta was next and the men's winner in 1:23:09.0, with Rob Copeland, 58, of Fayetteville, Ga., third in 1:23:36.1. Andreea Ianoli, 42, of Gallatin, Tenn., was fourth overall and the women's runner-up in 1:24:05.6. Two other Georgia guys - Chris Greene, 53, and Ilia Ayzenshtok, 26 - were fifth and sixth in 1:24:33.8 and 1:24.51.2, and third-place female Victoria Nicholson of Hixson was seventh overall and the first local finisher in 1:26:17.9. Chattanooga women Jenny Jouanne and Kay Baker were first and fourth in the 2.4-mile race in 48:17.4 and 50:15.7, and Chattanoogans Miller Williams and Kendrick Gibson were second and third in 49:23.8 and 50:06.7.
