The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga softball team bounced back impressively from an 11-1 loss Friday to 25th-ranked Kansas in the Stetson tournament in Deland, Fla. Saturday, UTC beat Kansas 4-0 in a rematch and then defeated La Salle by the same score as senior Taylor Deason pitched a two-hitter with nine strikeouts. Freshman Cori Jennings threw a three-hitter with six strikeouts against Kansas (19-2), and Sarah Beth Roberts homered in the fourth inning and walked and scored again in the three-run sixth inning, when Nicole Osterman doubled, Criket Blanco and Anyssa Robles singled in runs and Marina Wilkerson brought home the final score with a fielder's choice. Against La Salle, Roberts was 2-for-4 with a double, Blanco was 1-for-2 with an RBI single and an RBI, Osterman was 1-for-1 with a double, two walks and two runs scored and Alyssa Taylor had an RBI hit.

* Chattanooga State played softball for the first time in 13 days Saturday and began TCCAA competition with 7-0 and 13-0 home wins over Roane State, as Sharlene Godoy pitched a two-hitter with 14 strikeouts and Hanna Manley threw a five-inning three-hitter with eight strikeouts. Lindsey Stickrod and Izzy McCurry each had two hits with a home run and three RBIs in the first game, when Sydney Sloan and Courtney Crawford each was 2-for-4 before going 2-for-3 with a homer, two RBIs and two runs in Sloan's case and with an RBI and a run in Crawford's. Also in game two, Katie Scott was 1-for-1 with a three-run homer and Shannon Plese was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run for the Lady Tigers (12-6).

* Lee University won 10-4 Saturday evening in the first game of a three-game Gulf South Conference softball series at West Alabama. NiaRaye Ceasar was 2-for-4 with a three-run homer and Katie Drew also homered and singled for the Lady Flames (11-8, 3-6). Leigh Beatenbough got the pitching win with Angie Hughes recording seven strikeouts in three innigs of relief.

* Covenant College lost 10-2 and 6-5 in eight innings in USA softball Saturday at Ferrum. Madison Quirk and Morgan Lane each had two hits and an RBI for Covenant (5-3, 0-2) in the opener, and Jordan Brett had two hits and two RBIs in the rematch.

* The Tennessee Temple softball dropped to 1-5 with 4-0 and 4-1 losses Saturday at Truett-McConnell. Cayley Shoemaker was 2-for-4 in the second game with the RBI for TTU.

Basketball

* Nationally sixth-ranked Walters State defeated Cleveland State 60-39 in the women's championship game Saturday of the TCCAA/NJCAA Region VII basketball tournament in Memphis. Jamesha Mosley, a first-team All-TCCAA selection for the season, scored 16 points for Cleveland State (17-11) and was joined on the all-tournament team by Jlynn Majors. Jephany Brown had 20 points and 12 rebounds and Arjae Saunders had 15 points and four steals in the final for the Lady Senators (30-2). Teondra Crawford and Sydney Sims were All-TCCAA women's second-teamers from Chattanooga State; Ronald Jones, Ugo Mmonu and Tramon Moore were Chattanooga State men's second-team selections, while Rico Overall was a Cleveland State honoree.

* Double champion Lee University swept the NCCAA Mid-East Region basketball coach and player of the year honors for 2014-15 with Marty Rowe and Emileigh Swafford earning the women's top awards and coach Tommy Brown and senior Cory Billingsley taking the men's. Billingsley has averaged 16.6 points a game; Swafford, a freshman from Meigs County, averaged 16.2. Teammate Erin Walsh and Tennessee's Amanda Rector -- a USCAA second-team All-American from Dalton -- joined Swafford on the all-region first team with Lee's Alex Swope and Christina Johnson and Temple's Angel Foster making the second team. Temple's Cameron High joined Billingsley on the men's first team, while Lee's Chase Cullen, Hiwassee's Joel Bailey and Temple's Weedlens Beauvil were second-teamers and Lee's Stedmon Ford and Hiwassee's Jeff Golden received honorable mention.

Baseball

* The Tennessee Temple baseball team pulled out two one-run wins over visiting Ohio State-Lima on Saturday, 5-4 and 4-3. Caleb Lee was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Chase White scored twice in the first game, when White got the pitching win with two innings of five-strikeout relief and Micah Wyatt got the save for the Crusaders (6-2). Hunter Giles pitched a three-hitter with 11 strikeouts in game two, and Wyatt and Lee each had an RBI and a run.

* Covenant College won 16-1 over LaGrange in the first game of their USA South baseball doubleheader Saturday but lost the weekend series with a 4-3 defeat in the finale. K.C. Simons was 4-for-5 with three runs scored and two RBIs and Will Carlton and Caleb Bloye each had three hits and three RBIs in the win for the Scots (7-7, 4-5), while Z Arima was 3-for-4 and scored three runs and pitcher Micah Mabe allowed an unearned run in seven innings. Forrest Hunter was 3-for-4 and Bloye was 2-for-4 with a two-run hit in Saturday's loss.

* Lee University lost 3-2 and won 12-6 in Gulf South baseball Saturday at West Alabama. Trenton Hill batted in both runs for the Flames (12-5-1, 4-5-1) in the first game. In their win, Ben Holland was 3-for-4 with four RBIs, M.J. Brown was 2-for-4 with three RBIs, Andres Nelo was 3-for-4 and scored three runs and Luke Toms also scored three and had two RBIs.

* Rhodes College erupted late in both games and beat Sewanee 14-9 and 12-1 in a Southern Athletic Association baseball doubleheader relocated Saturday to Atlanta. Leadoff batter Bill Munson drove in seven runs in the two games for Rhodes (12-2, 5-0). Tyler Minkkinen was 3-for-5 with two RBIs, Michael Walker was 2-for-4 and Brett Polston and Ben Clune each scored twice in the opener for Sewanee (4-3, 2-3). Clune was 3-for-3 and Nathaniel Howard was 2-for-2 and scored the run in game two. The teams play again today.
